New: Colorado State says 2026 will be one of the quietest hurricane seasons in decades, with only 40% of normal activity! That makes me 😃 They are forecasting a total energy (ACE) of only 50 units (honestly that may be too high). The normal is 123 units. Only 2013 (36) and 1997 (41) had less. 1/

The snoozing Atlantic hurricane season is off to its slowest start (by ACE index) in 17 years. 2009 had its first storm, then a major hurricane in mid-August.
In the month of August, Tropical Activity tends to ramp up. Most of the storms develop in the orange and red areas. Over the last 100 years, over 70 systems developed just east of the Lesser Antilles. This year with El Niño, activity should remain low.
Dangerous and extreme heat will persist across the Southwest U.S. through tomorrow, before slowly migrating eastward across the central Plains and southeastern U.S. by this weekend. Monsoonal showers will help bring some relief from extreme temperatures across portions of the Desert Southwest.
Water temperatures typically peak over the next week. The upcoming weekend looks pretty good to find a lake or pool.

Extreme heat continues across the Southwest. Temps may top 120. The heat may expand across the West and south-central US into mid-month. Air quality alerts & red flag warnings are also in place across portions of the West. Exposure to both smoke & heat can be a greater health risk than either alone.
Wildfires rage in the Pacific Northwest over the last several days. The Tartar fire in Idaho is over 100,000 acres after exploding in size overnight Saturday, while dangerous wildfires encroach on the city of Spokane, destroying hundreds of structures and prompting evacuations.
