Writing about Surrealism & the rise of fascism & am reminded that at the Feminist Strike in Florence I saw one protester with Max Ernst's painting The Triumph of Surrealism (1937). Depressingly relevant.

Have been thinking a lot lately about something Dada artist Hugo Ball wrote in his diary in 1916, amidst the violence & turmoil of World War I, as he reflected on the movement's use of masks, costumes, & performance: "The horror of our time, the paralyzing background of events, is made visible."
