It's great seeing just how many people and outlets are doing great, well researched, independent tabletop journalism (or something like it). Give this a watch
I've been really enjoying creating these essay-type videos - researching, scripting, learning how to edit. A few people have referred to this one as 'journalism' which I find unsettling for various reasons but I understand it was intended as a compliment. Anyway you should watch it, it's good
One thing I've noticed is a lot of outlets are having trouble with is that people are interested in having fun and enjoying what they like. Annoying lefty snark voice that was popular a few years ago is grating in the age of Mamdani, Abughazaleh and El-Sayed. This goes double for hobby coverage.
How have i not seen a Girl Snake Catcher ttrpg on a table at Gen Con yet
GIRL SNAKE CATCHER. she makes a snug little income by securing reptiles for traveling shows SHE JUST GRABS THEM (The Washington Bee, Washington DC, November 8, 1902)
You do not have to personally like every person that you are in community with. if you want to do something important that takes a lot of effort and moving parts, you'll likely be in contact with people you don't like or vibe with. that's ok! you do not have to like or want to hang with everyone.
Not to take this in a totally unserious direction, but this is why I hate what they did to Magik in the current X-Men comics. On Krakoa she healed, she got better. In the current era she just "accepts" the bad part of her as a part of her, that there's nothing to heal. It betrays a lot of her arc
there’s a general social disdain towards nebulous concepts like healing, “getting better,” etc. in favor of validity and a feeling that one’s actions are, in one form or another, “just.” there’s nothing wrong with me; the world is wrong. this is comforting, but, ultimately, we live in the world.
You’re not ENTITLED to your audiences money, especially when you’re repeating capitalism in a space that is, at its core, anti-capitalist. You cannot claim your product should be accessible and then put everything behind a paywall or act like it’s a special treat when it’s not.
If your marketing is any form of ‘if you don’t give us money we will die’ you’re trying to be a charity. Find out why ppl aren’t paying for your content then fix it or find new income for said content (advertising) More BIPoC on staff getting paid always makes me want to give money, just saying
A trend I was feeling all weekend was the desire to not feel like a commodity. When being a fan means stripping a person down to a collectable they can feel it. More people want to talk deeply about their work and the passion they feel for it.
The great thing about GenCon is you really learn how many great people are still doing journalism in the tabletop space, and every year I meet more cool people doing it. There's no single load bearing part of it, it's a community.
Support your local independent journalists! Panda and I are gonna be rolling out our Gen Con coverage and we'd love your support so we can keep writing about cool games!

Marked safe after another year of GenCon. Maybe my most social year yet? Focused more on connections this year, more ttrpg coverage. Feel better about that choice now. And shout out to @ragepandapajamas.bsky.social for absolutely killing it as first time GenCon press!
Just based on Gen Con, Gen X is so incredibly cooked by AI. Half the dudes aged 45+ are wearing the worst AI nerd shirt you've seen in your life
Already seeing some VtM fans try to play the "V6 is for cringe queer theater kids" with absolutely 0 self-awareness
I love it when boardgame podcasters are forced to play party games with their normie families and have to say things like “This is a terrible game, but it was a lot of fun.”
You know in a sitcom when they do a Con episode, they have all the congoers obsessed with a legally distinct version of a nerd property, with weird lingo that makes the protagonists feel out of place? That's how Gen Con feels as a non Dungeon Crawler Carl reader.
@rascal.news mention! Just feeling a little hype-y. Also yes! @wargamer.com ‘s team is here live and they are doing fantastic work. I know @danarndtwrites.bsky.social and @ragepandapajamas.bsky.social are also doing some interviews here as well.
Last night while testing Vampire: The Masquerade V6 I: - Fell on a Ventrue I was trying to impress, knocking her prone mid-fight - Kicked a wight in the dick til he split in half - Used a dead body for a ventriloquisim bit I fear I may need to play more Vampire
The 2007 nerd in me would be so jealous that I not only met @felicia.day , but tossed her muffin too (she said I could say that)
They should invent a Gen Con that isn't the week when rent is due
