The U.S. Attorney believes that a "public rebuke" and an internal review are sufficient for egregious prosecutorial misconduct that put my family through hell. My seven-year-old is still having nightmares and panic attacks related to this case. Justice requires transparency and accountability.

The full brief is remarkable. While the U.S. Attorney attempts to downplay the misconduct, he admits to discussing the incident with Main Justice as early as Sept. 27 and having the Oct. 9 grand jury transcript as early Oct. 14. The brief shows that the office repeatedly misled the Court.

Years ago I coined the milleneuve, which is a unit to measure how horrible the sky color is based on Villeneuve films. Blade Runner 2049 is around 900mn. Today is around 250 I'd say. (It's a very scientific scale.)

The TV show The Middleman would do things like randomly have a shirtless Mark Dacascos fight dozens of Luchadors and use something called the Wu-Han Thumb of Death on their leader. We used to be a proper country.

But I really do think that there is an urge to not be "mean" or "unfair" or "negative" that is making us grope for rationalizations for why it is not just Correct but Righteous to dislike this person. (or book. or tv show. or or or) And it's actually okay to just... not like things.

There will always be people I bar from my communities, but the threshold is "are you doing real harm to the people within the community or the community's ability to thrive" Bring back just pettily disliking folks because you don't like them, without it having to be deeper than that or acted on. 😂

Romancelandia is a fractious community with more grudges and feuds than most people could dream. And during @romancingthevote.com everyone sort of agrees to put down the weapons and do This Thing together for a greater cause, because community is bigger than who we want to hang out with.

The media's been on the ropes for a long time--critic jobs, reporter jobs, all jobs--but I hope we can get to a place where we once again take it for granted that there are investigative sickos all over the place who can do this kind of thing for a year or more. It's gotten much harder.

This kind of work needs deep pockets, a lot of people, a lot of time, job security. Lawyers who are the nicest & most skilled killers you ever met. Legacy pub or indie newsletter, this takes time & it's expensive & scary. People w institutional knowledge & experience are key. Even w that, it's hard.

2) Elaborating on 1st point: To do it right, it's your full time job and then some. For months. Alice McShane & Jessica Sartenaer from BBC did only this. FOR A YEAR. They had others on the team as well. I love indie journalism & have written about supporting it, many times. But wherever it happens

2 things that stays true across all of it 1) how time-intensive it is. Not just the reporting, the moral injury of the survivors, the psychic weight of wanting to get it right, the impact on lives & careers, and oh yeah, the subject's minions might be threatening you & your side. Daily. Been there.

In the past 10 years, many have done misconduct reporting. I'm in the rare position of having done that kind of reporting for many different kinds of publications & a book. So my perspective on all this is somewhat unique. Every process, editor, project, subject, publication is different. But ...

"Liberal bubble" has only ever meant anywhere where right wing perspectives aren't artificially elevated and forced into everyone's feeds.

The only *guaranteed* piece of craft advice I can give -- I mean the advice that is universally applicable -- is that if you kill many other writers and eat their scribere gland (roughly the size of a black-eyed pea, so be careful not to damage it) then your prose will improve immensely

while there are problems with anything, the nuclear block is absolutely my second favorite thing that bluesky did. (my first favorite is detach quote, which is another thing that wrecks the way they like to use social media)

As always, my first response was, "how long do you have?" They'd read Burn It Down so we had a shorthand in no time. Anyway I'm in the film as something of a tour guide to toxic Hollywood "norms." But the heroes are 9 people who came forward to tell their stories; they, as always, risked a lot. 🔥

I remain grateful for their willingness to attempt to hold this man & his many enablers accountable. Jessica Sartenaar & Alice McShane have done extraordinary work, building on last year's AirMail reporting on Leto. They came to me w/ questions: Why is Hollywood like this? Why does he keep working?

As the author of the post writes, that's *not* the same thing as saying you should hang out with or work with someone abusive or who crosses a line you think is important. But not everyone likes me! That's ok. One thing I think about a lot is: Respect others enough to let them dislike you.
