We are ready to scale up glycogen analysis using electron microscopy. By applying a new AI-based image analysis pipeline, workload for 50 samples was reduced from ~600 hours to ~20 hours. This moves us beyond small-scale TEM studies. Details below 👇
First preprint from my PhD! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... We show that piperine: 1️⃣ increases ON myosin in resting skeletal muscle. 2️⃣ enhances dynamic contractility 3️⃣ in a muscle-type-dependent manner @hesselanthony.bsky.social
Piperine activates the thick filament of resting rat skeletal muscle, enhancing dynamic contractility in a fiber-type-dependent manner
Thick-filament activation, whereby myosin heads transition from an OFF to an ON state, is a key regulatory step in muscle contraction and a promising therapeutic target. The availability of ON-state m...

I have had the fun (and challenging!) opportunity to explain some of my PhD research to a general audience. Thanks to @apsphysiology.bsky.social!
Do fast cars burn more fuel? What if you swap out the engine? Your muscles work the same way—and in this case, the "engine" is a compound found in black pepper. @danielzkruse.bsky.social breaks it down on the #ISpyPhysiology blog: ow.ly/OQSQ50WATn9 🧪

Our new very collaborative paper showing that muscle myosin has a reduced energy demand in diabetes. Big impact on weight control in our mind!!! Thank you to everyone involved and funders @lundbeckfonden.bsky.social @novo-nordisk.bsky.social @ucph.bsky.social @myoblue.bsky.social #diabetes
Dysregulated skeletal muscle myosin super-relaxation and energetics in male participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus - Diabetologia
Aims/hypothesis Disrupted energy balance is critical for the onset and development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Understanding of the exact underlying metabolic mechanisms remains incomplete, but skele...

@ambiotech.us on the lookout to hire some #MuscleScientists on a short-term, muscle small-angle X-ray diffraction project in June / July in NY. Must have work permission in USA and must have permeabilized fiber mechanics experience. X-ray experience not mandatory. Full travel plus pay. DM me!
Just completed our first x-ray diffraction experiments at the PETRA III beamline in Hamburg - what an experience! Intense night shifts with cool science on sarcomeric structures in skeletal muscle 💪🏼 Can’t wait to get into the results! Thanks to @hesselanthony.bsky.social and @ambiotech.us
