An Oak Tree a Day I would much rather make this about beautiful trees in #nature but sometimes things need to be addressed. Here’s a row of oaks that were unmercifully hacked a year or so ago You wouldn’t use a plumber for your colonoscopy so hire an arborist for your trees. California #nativePlants

What’s Blooming in SoCal? Rod wirelettuce (Stephanomeria virgata) Pay attention! What may look like a barren landscape of dried foliage often times holds pockets of hidden beauty. An annual plant & will seed readily. Sunflower family so it’s good for pollinators. California #nativePlants #nature

An Oak Tree a Day When we let the parks district take care of open spaces, do we need to have a coalition of educated land managers to supervise? Dudes, you planted this tree & it has established but I think that it’s time to take the stakes and guide wires off. California #nativePlants #nature

#OldTrailsFire in Spokane now appears to be most destructive wildfire in WA State history by wide margin (650+ structures lost), w/additional TBD losses nearby. Other PacNW fires actively burning, though less destructive, are far larger & could burn for weeks amid severe drought.

What’s Blooming (almost) in SoCal? Rhus ovata (sugar bush) not to be confused with Rhus integrifolian (lemonade berry) this is the one with the taco shaped leaves. Not quite in bloom yet but how cute are the buds? Super drought tolerant when established & can get BIG California #nativePlants #nature

White buds on the purple terminus of branches of the sugar bush. The leaves are dark green and leathery. Leaves are bent inward at the mid vein giving them a taco-like appearance. A view of the large shrub (approximately 15x15’) with thousands of buds getting ready to bloom.

An Oak Tree a Day A small grove of happy short and wide coast live oaks in the open space of a WUI (wildland urban interface). While most fire officials don’t like ground resting branches, I appreciate their penchant for leisure. California #nativePlants #nature would have cropped sign but CROW!

An Oak Tree a Day When you make a lot of cuts on a tree, you sometimes end up w a canopy that looks a bit like a witches broom (and probably affords weaker attachments.) But this isn’t about that, do you see it? For those birds that need a little housing help. California #nativePlants #nature.

There is a green pop up shade structure in the background to help shade those that are here for a burial. A small birdhouse made out of a birch branch sits nestled between the the trunk and the upright branches of the oak tree.

An Oak Tree a Day It’s cemetery day again. A very umbrella-like tree shades the lucky vets. I like this part of the cemetery bc the markers are old & mostly for those that fought. No fake flowers here like the ones that adorn the ritzier areas.TY for your service. California #nativePlants #nature.

The center scar is grown over but the one on the right side of the truck looks to have been cut too close leaving a large open area. Some of upright branches are straight some are twisted. The memorial section of the cemetery flies the flags of the different service branches.

With numerous large fires already burning, the weekend fire wx outlook is concerning for interior PacNW (Cascades crest eastward). A dry cold frontal passage will bring strong winds/low humidity against severe drought backdrop, leading to "extremely critical" risk. #ORwx #WAwx

Fire weather risk outlook from NOAA SPC for Saturday. It shows a large region of elevated to critical risk, with a portion of eastern Washington designed as "extremely critical risk"--the highest level.

A tall skinny recovering oak tree weighs dark charred bark and a fairly full canopy on the top quarter of this tree. It is in a wooded area surrounded by a duff layer and some dropped branches. Beyond is a wrought iron fence and peeks of private properties. The sky is clear and blue. A closer look at the trunk of the tree is almost hand shaped. Both sides light dead wood arms that will probably fall soon.
