Oh dear deities. The people who thought they could make political hay with a data center ban apparently used an LLM to ask about existing data centers in Petaluma, and are now demanding answers for bullshit the LLM made up. And some of these people have actually been respected in the community!

Abstract This article analyses narrative mechanisms that are common in dialogues with LLM chatbots. In combination, these mechanisms produce an interactional strategy for maximising user engagement, which we call affirmative narration. Affirmative narration serves to convince users of the chatbot’s utility. We analyse three narrative mechanisms that support affirmative narration in human-LLM dialogues: firstly, guiding the user to view chatbot as an intelligent and reliable character; secondly, activating masterplots, culturally significant and recurring story templates; and thirdly, using characters and masterplots not only to affirm, but also to isolate the user. The case studies range from a journalist’s unsettling chatbot experiment to cases where users have experienced delusions or even killed themselves after lengthy interactions with a chatbot. The analyses illustrate the worrying sides of affirmative narration, and the article thus concludes with the discussion of LLMs as a genre of narrative media which requires a new type of literacy.

Finally dropped into the Marin Museum of Bicycling in Fairfax, after years of missing it, and holy crap is that worth the stop. Really cool collection, I hope they manage to catalog and label more, but the docents are awesome too.

Another conversation which... the AI psychosis is real, and I can't push back too hard without getting a reaction, but I am astounded at how much money is apparently being spent in the hopes that inserting LLMs into something will be more cost effective than simple tweaks to process.

Looked into the details of "The Reality Network", and suddenly had the uncomfortable realization that WASM means that every one of those "checking to see if you're a human" pauses could be stealing compute for proof-of-work (like ads likely already are). JavaScript was a mistake.
If anything, this number is low because our bar for what qualifies is way way too high.
