I’m not gonna go read the HWA’s AI thing because I get mad enough already but as far as I’m concerned if you’re an artist and using gen AI you’re a new variety of scab. Maybe it is here to stay but I’m not about to flip on fellow artists because of it. Fuck that forever.

Professional writer organizations should not send out pro-AI propaganda in the form of tantrum-having "essays" to their members, and I don't think that's controversial.

So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

“Sure. Sure.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

the whole "women's sports exist to protect women from men" framing is hilarious, given that a lot of these divisions were initially formed because men were deeply embarrassed any time a woman beat them at a sport olympic shooting was mixed gender right up until a woman won the gold

I did the cover for this book, which UK folks can now buy. "When terrorism was rife and going on strike could get you thrown into prison, members of Attercliffe Stupid Club went fishing in empty buckets, made bunting from carrots and were frequently mentioned in the Houses of Parliament."

Attercliffe Stupid Club A Political Manifestival

An account of Attercliffe Stupid Club. A satirical club whose non-violent members misbehaved during the violent age of the Sheffield Outrages.

This already happens WAY more often than people know. We've had to reinvent bronze casting more times than I recall. Your sheets growing up actually were softer and better and no we can't fix it. Nobody knows how to make the good flexy fountain pen nibs anymore.

I smell bullshit, and suspect we've already heard the last of The Grokyssey. But it really does point to the appeal of AI - it's for weirdly inept men who are also control freaks. The people who think they can do better without any skills or training or knowledge.
