I read the whole newsletter; the author invokes Wild West imagery later in this fatuous screed. Relevant that data colonialism includes proposed expansions of AI data centres onto Indigenous lands / sacred sites, bastardization of our knowledges, infringement on data sovereignty & ICE surveillance.

So apparently that HWA pro-AI newsletter also uses Indigenous water rights issues as a prop, trivializing the activism by Indigenous peoples to protect our water including specific anti-data centre actions. I guess they figured why not alienate Indigenous horror writers while they’re at it?

“Sure. Sure. Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a planes so does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along. Suddenly YOUR water might not be clean, so it’s a Big Deal”.

There’s something to the fact that if you were already boycotting Tim Horton’s & NYT in solidarity with Palestine then you’d be already be set for solidarity with trans folks impacted by those outlets. Palestine is a crisis and a moral litmus test for how you care for and about oppressed people.

I rewatched Mallrats last night, and while it still has its charms, it occurred to me that we’ve been suffering the glut of male-centric pop culture fixations in our media for a long, long time. Imagine slacker comedies by women that talked incessantly about Barbies becoming enduring hits.

I think the abandonment of indigenous elements in peoples weird west setting because they don't want to confront the uncomfortable specter of colonialism and the hollywood indian, let alone get in the way of their fun, is cowardice and contributes to the erasure that often defines indigenous racism.

There was a story in my grade 4 reader about a group of kids who travelled to an underwater kingdom. It stuck with me except that I can’t remember AT ALL anything else about it, incl. character names or author. Rural Canadian elementary school in the 90s, so the reader itself was from 70s or 80s.

It’s very funny to me that overwrought vibes-based quotes get attributed to Hamlet, specifically. I guess they’re assuming people are less familiar than with Romeo and Juliet but also know it’s a tragedy so they can just straight-up lie & people who have never read or seen the play will believe it.
