Just booked up travel and accommodation for a trip to Belfast for a conference, and have bolted on two gigs and a trip to Dublin on top. Happy days.

Went north of Watford to do a parkrun - took a 10-car fast train (which had started at Birmingham) back and it’s absolutely heaving! But apparently the trains are quiet in the summer…

OTD in 1966 television coverage of the World Cup Final. BBC1 had Grandstand presented by David Coleman and that now-famous commentary from Kenneth Wolstenholme. Over on ITV World of Sport was introduced by Eamonn Andrews and the match commentator was Hugh Johns.

BBC coverage of the GM mayor by-election has been quite amazingly half-arsed, even in its live blog. Sky are wiping the floor with them.

The excitement people felt when indie/underground stuff started being referenced in mainstream pop culture was based on an equation of “I’m a good person, people like me like band X, so people who like band X are a good person.” Many have not yet accepted the ego-death that this is not true!!

Just saw the Flixbus to Hamburg on Deptford Broadway and been trying to work out if I could stand an 18-hour overnight coach trip. After checking the prices, the answer is “no”.

I read this as "Kiss Tory", though I'm not sure near-neighbours Cleverly, Truss, Kwarteng and Frost will among the crowds.

Interesting and realistic interview with the CEO of Reach, who no longer wants reach, and now wants paid subscription revenue, as Google traffic is just in freefall due to AI. Problem is trying to get people to pay premium prices for outlets that were trashed in the 2010s rush for cheap clicks.

Strangely reassuring to see the BBC sticking with tradition and making the male pundits wear ties for the World Cup final.

Finally got to see the lost music venues exhibition at the V&A - third time lucky, that section of the museum had been closed during the heatwave! Worth the trip, though.

I recommend a trip to Downe (no garden centres but it does have Christmas Tree Farm) - R8 bus from Orpington for the full “this can’t be in London” experience. Not getting built on any time soon and rightly so.

Met a mate in the Plough in Crews Hill last night. Supposedly London’s most northernly pub. Does feel like a country gastro-pub - good food, massive garden. Crews Hill has a decent claim to being the least London-like bit of London.
