Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site not because it was remarkable in its prime, but because it survived to our era untouched: one moment, preserved for all time. But future generations won't know what OUR world was like unless we do the same. This is why we MUST bury Toronto with a volcano

Congrats @katecavanaugh.bsky.social --it has been really amazing to watch this work grow from the sidelines over the past many years. Glad it is out!
🧵 What if one reason fertility declines with age isn’t just genetic-but mechanical? Thrilled to share our new paper in @NatureCellBio : Elevated contractility drives implantation failure in mouse embryos from aged females… here’s what we found 👇 www.nature.com/articles/s41... 1/11
See this? This = implanting mouse embryo. Usually this happens inside its mother and is invisible to us, but we can actually watch implantation ex vivo with the hope of understanding why implantation goes awry in embryos of older women. A 🧵...
I am chairing the Graduate Research network session today @SocDevBio. If you're around come say hi!
Am I the only person who is a bit tired of hearing mitochondria are overlooked? They are very much not.
We tend to think of genetics and proteins as the main drivers of health and disease. But one biologist is exploring what he considers an overlooked factor, from the level of molecules all the way up to the mind: mitochondria. www.quantamagazine.org/martin-picar...

🚨 New preprint: We reprocessed 77k zebrafish RNA-seq datasets from across the global research community and found hidden viruses in 10% of them—including a fish virus whose proteins are 91% identical to human Influenza B—then built a generalizable pipeline. bit.ly/4vxFF72
"The dream of every cell is to become two cells." - François Jacob, paraphrasing Jacques Monod.
"shouldn't have been done" -- are we really advocating for censorship in scientific biometrics now? I don't care for rankings but it really concerns me that our community increasingly talks in ways that are so polarizing.
This, emphatically, shouldn't have been done, and shouldn't be used. You'd think we'd have learned that someone else's contextless algorithmic division of science outputs into "the best" and "not the best" is a disaster. Doesn't matter whether AI or Elsevier does it. the-one-percent.qedscience.com
Only in biology do we a) feel bad for the absolutely richest labs in the world, and b) argue that a three year runway is unreasonable.
I mean, HHMI is free to fund what they want. But didn't they JUST bring in a slew of folks for 4D Cellular Physiology and promise 15 years but now those folks are ... without a home? That is certainly questionable, especially given the current funding climate. www.thetransmitter.org/community/ex...
[1/n] Our preprint-in-progress on RNA regionalization in Stentor is no longer in progress! Now @pnas.org 🥳 Turns out a single cell isn't a homogenous soup… it has molecular geography, including things like regionalized transcription factors. Think bicoid, but in a ciliate.
Genome-wide analysis of mRNA regionalization in a giant single cell | PNAS
The molecular mechanisms that produce cell structure are poorly understood. The giant ciliate Stentor coeruleus is a unicellular model organism who...

If 15-20% of labs have >20 scientists (call these "large labs"), this means ~40 percent of scientists work in "large labs"
Median Lab size: 11 scientists

If you're a biologist, you essentially cannot use Fable 5 yet 😭
Calling all researchers using Anthropic's AI model Claude: how are you using the new Claude Fable 5 model in your research? We want to hear about the most impressive things it's built for your research projects or left you asking what the fuss is all about. Let us know.

Molecular biologist & geneticist Susan Lindquist (b. #OTD in 1949) was a pioneer in studying protein folding. Her research demonstrated protein folding errors contribute heavily to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's & Parkinson's diseases. National Medal of Science in 2010. #WomenInSTEM

This deep sea creature is as sharp & clear as broken class, & can grow as long as your hand. This giant amphipod, (Cystisoma) only has two colored body parts: the dense orange stomach/egg pouch, & two MASSIVE eyes, which are a glittering holographic orange layer completely covering its head. 📽️ MBARI
Yes, especially so when you are a biologist for whom 90% works is an astounding success.

I'll be writing a few posts about new features in Micro-Manager. If you are interested in those, please follow @micro-manager.bsky.social.
Development of Micro-Manager code has accelerated quite a bit with availability of the new generation of AI coding tools (and the need to provide functionality for microscopes in our core at UCSF). Follow these developments here: nicost.github.io/microscope-t...
The pearl clutching over generated references is a bit funny. Hallucinated references may be new, but the age old problem of missing citations or citations that have nothing to do with the text, self citations, or citations of friends--these are all equally harmful and prevalent and ignored problems
i shudder to think of the rather large number of times i myself have entered a citation incorrectly. pray tell me folks: how do you tell a hallucinated reference from a human mistake? i am all for minimizing AI slop, but this policy seems likely to catch as much non-AI as AI.
wow — the preprint host, arxiv, is banning authors for a year if they submit papers with hallucinated citations 🤖
