South Korea's coal use increased due to weak performance of nuclear, while Australia and Poland saw increases due to insufficient clean energy growth, and poor wind conditions in Poland's case.
Italy increased gas use because of weak hydropower conditions, even if solar power growth was strong enough to cover demand growth.
Outside of the OECD, China and India have both seen rebounds in coal-fired power generation after falling output last year. Gas-to-coal switching is not a significant factor in either country so the increases are not related to the Hormuz crisis however.
Japan, Turkiye, Korea and the UK achieved major reductions in gas use, while the drop in coal use came from the U.S., offsetting increases in Australia, Korea and Poland.
OECD power generation from gas has seen a significant drop in the five months since LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz were first disrupted. This has not resulted in an increase in coal-fired generation as solar and wind have covered demand growth and the fall in gas.
Man, if Putin had told Trump exactly what he wanted the US to do to help Iran and Russia and hurt Ukraine, it would have been exactly what Trump did in his war. This is a Russian strategic dream we are watching.

I recall we had a period of time where the response of Starmer and Cooper to concerns about these groups was ‘I like flags’
Leaders of flag-raising group Raise the Colours Oxfordshire placed trackers on highway workers’ cars to find out their home addresses, the High Court has heard. RTC then attempted to intimidate the highway staff into no longer removing flags by repeating their addresses to them.
On the night of 4 August (from 18:00 on 3 August), the enemy launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 136 strike UAVs of the Shahed type (including jet-powered ones), Gerber, Italmas Preliminary data, as of 08:00, #Ukraine air defences had shot down or neutralised 117 enemy UAVs

Geopolitics and Security Studies Center analyst Dionis Cenusa on the Ceuta crisis: “Ceuta is a geopolitical node that today involves the traditional interests of Spain and the emerging interests of the US and Israel related to Iran and the Middle East. 1/
“If Spain loses control over Ceuta, the US will likely replace it with a military base, allowing it to conduct its operations against Iran without needing the European pillar of NATO.” 2/2
