The nation’s first debtors’ union, organizing to build power with debt as leverage. You are not a loan! Press: press@debtcollective.org

So many people I encounter, especially in HigherEd, believe the only strategy for this moment is "keep your head down." @debtcollective.bsky.social didn't change priorities in 2024, nor in 2020, nor in 2016. They barreled ahead. There first big win was $800 million. This one is $11 billion.

Congratulations to everyone who worked their asses off for something that any semi-decent and ultimately self-interested government should have done in penance www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/b...

Even under Trump we can still force through billions of dollars of student debt cancellation All praise to @eddebtjustice.bsky.social for fighting the good fight for over a decade to make this the largest class action in US history The fight is far from over

Student loans are breaking *again.* This time, debtors enrolled in the SAVE plan have received a wrongful message claiming they've missed months of payments and are now delinquent. This isn't true. It's a wrongful message—and another massive error. Payments should be paused.

The Department of Education finally admitted it. They had a massive glitch in which debtors were wrongfully told their payment was going to be $50 a month. It was a mistake. And now it will cost debtors even more as they're forced to reapply to IDR. www.businessinsider.com/student-loan...

6,000 student-loan borrowers hoping for affordable repayment plans need to reapply

After receiving an incorrect student-loan payment amount, 6,000 borrowers received an email to reapply for an income-driven repayment plan.

A student debt lawsuit led by Debt Collective members continues to reveal Ed Dept incompetence. There are 4 plaintiffs. Lawyers submitted 5 additional debtor declarations as a case update. DOJ responded saying looking at *5* more accounts is too "time-consuming" and "tedious."

“Monopolization of something that’s a human right.” As AvalonBay and Equity move toward a mega-merger, the @latenantsunion.bsky.social and @debtcollective.bsky.social are organizing tenants against junk fees, rent debt and opaque utility charges.

A combination between AvalonBay and Equity Residential would put close to 200,000 apartments in the hands of one company.

We need College for All — but let's be clear. A degree is not a sure path to a job. And today, the strongest pathway to health care is by getting a job. Those rights shouldn't be tied together. That's why we need Medicare for All, College for All and a jobs guarantee.

The amount of disfunction and chaos happening in the student loan system right now is beyond comprehension. We need to pause all federal student debt payments and the entire repayment system to prevent additional errors, mistakes and illegalities from occurring.

If it sounds unthinkable—because it is. There are student debtors who have paid *every single qualifying payment* the government requires to receive cancellation after 20+ yrs. They're owed cancellation. But instead of eliminating the balance, ED is still illegally collecting.

We are hearing multiple reports that student debtors who are legally enrolled in SAVE — and who have payments in forbearance — are being involuntarily taken out of SAVE and placed into another student debt plan without consent. If this is you, we want to hear from you.

The Department of Education has been telling folks they *must* leave the SAVE student debt plan by July 1. But days ago, Nelnet quietly updated their FAQ page noting some debtors' 90-day clock to leave the SAVE plan won't begin until 2027. They've been lying about the timeline.

Q: When will I receive my 90-day notice?

A: Nelnet is notifying nearly three million Nelnet borrowers, so we're reaching out in waves. You'll receive your notice between July 2026 and March 2027.

Many student debtors are being quoted a ten-fold monthly student debt payment. From $50 a month to $500 a month. From $35 a month to $300+ a month. Trump's payment increase will crush working people and we need an opposition party to stand up and fight back now.

If you have federal student debt, you may have read an email from the Dept of Education urging you to switch off of SAVE by July 1. You actually have until "September 29th at the earliest." Did you already switch? We want to hear from you. Our members are taking legal action.

The Department of Education is sending confusing emails to debtors saying they're adjusting debtors' student loan interest rates — which will go into effect from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2026. Except... we are beyond those dates. Those dates are now historical.

Weeks ago, the Ed Dept announced that federal student debtors who enroll in auto pay will be eligible for a 1% interest rate reduction. That turned out to be a scam. Debtors are met with a "you can't" message when trying to enroll. The entire loan system is dysfunctional.

It is interesting to compare and contrast what Third Way says in this article, to what they have said in the past opposing student debt cancellation. 🧵

This week, Debt Collective student debt members filed a motion for a preliminary injunction. Functionally, this is a payment pause. The next day, a federal judge ordered the Ed Department to reply by July 1. This has huge implications for anyone with student debt. We explain:

New: In response to a lawsuit brought by Debt Collective members, the U.S. Department of Education says "no borrower will be required to move off the SAVE Plan until September 29, 2026 at the earliest" and that “most borrowers…will get even more time than that.”

Happy Juneteenth, or what many Black Americans call 'Jubilee Day' or 'Emancipation Day'. A reminder that many of our household debts—medical debt, student loans, etc—are illegitimate. But reparations to Black Americans is a very legitimate debt that we do owe and must pay.

For the first time in Trump's administration, we're calling on Trump to issue a pause on all federal student loan payments. Today, fundamental parts of the student loan system are broken to such a high degree it can only be described as "non-functional." Major issues happening:
