Unfortunately, that is the Canadian model for science funding. It is aimed at allowing politicians to make splashy announcements while underfunding Canadian scientists and students. More big shots to compete for less money. 🧪

Today 🇨🇦 announced the 64 scholars recruited from top US universities for the Canada Global Impact+ Chairs. They sounds like great scientists. But the enormous level of funding funnelled to this program is jaw-dropping when compared to the pitiful success rates at CIHR.

The fallout from the collapse of this glacier - a torrent of mud surging down the valley - killed hundreds of people. Gone, in a flash. Those people were wiped out by anthropogenic climate change. Our governments are simply not responding quickly enough to this disaster which is already upon us.

I had not some across this before, but if you want an example Nathan Cofnas’ scholarship, this is a doozy. Again I say, being sacked is not the problem; being recruited in the first place is what deserves scrutiny.
