To do otherwise leads to shitheads going on about how "transgender people are merely cissexual transvestites" or to declare themselve authorities on OTHERS' selves, transmedicalism, hierarches. It is not just counterproductive, it is actively harmful.
I think transsexual should ultimately just be a synonym of transgender, and if you start adding a bunch of arbitrary qualifiers to separate them you've lost the plot.
The way queerness is seen as something only young people are allowed to perform really boggles my mind.
