Trump’s Greenland Deal: Modest Gains, Lasting Costs

The U.S.-Denmark-Greenland defense agreement modestly strengthens U.S. Arctic posture and permanently binds Greenland to NATO. But those gains were largely available without coercion, and the Trump ad...

Who knows where we end up in terms of instruments. But the fact that the terms "kill switch" & "torture chamber" are being thrown around to describe the EU's China strategy suggests we're really through the looking glass

In a best-case scenario, durable U.S. defense engagement with Greenland paves the way for a broader NATO role in the territory. However, much will depend on the implementation of the agreement in the coming months and years, argue CSIS experts. Read: https://bit.ly/4huKXuY

The UK-EU relationship is like a bad rom-com. The UK broke up with the EU. The EU was shocked and sad about it. But soon realized there was a lot about the UK that was annoying (opt outs, hostility to federalism, America’s poodle) and they moved on. 1/2

That juxtaposition of "a Europe of nation states, a Europe capable of being a genuine global power" is striking. Does he truly believe these things are positively correlated? How does he think such an EU would function? Or is it just that after so many years I still haven't got used to cakeism?

Tony Blair rejoins the growing voices of those calling for an abandonment of Labour EU red lines and reversing Brexit. But in a symbol of all that was wrong with the Remain campaign, he does so saying the UK should only rejoin if its demands on EU reform are met 🧐

So, this is not about rerunning the debates of 2016 but taking a new approach rooted in the reality of 2026.

There is no point in inching towards Europe as we feel what British public opinion might accommodate. We should be clear that we want back into a formal relationship with the EU. But it must be a Europe on a credible path to reform, a Europe of nation states, a Europe capable of being a genuine global power. Otherwise, though Britain should continue to cooperate with the EU where it is in our mutual interest to do so, and though we should always remain open to changing circumstances, Britain will show that it can and is prepared to remain independent.

The summit will not fail because expectations have been whittled down to almost nothing. Beijing would likely prefer a long list of deliverables and Washington a shorter list, but neither has much ambition for path-breaking arrangements, writes Scott Kennedy. Read: https://bit.ly/4ymgFlz

It's not an election, it's a Special Political Operation. I'm baffled by the Western commentators who act as though Putin is on tenterhooks, waiting to see whether his war of aggression against Ukraine has cost him votes in Nakhuygrad South-West. @andrewchak.bsky.social offers an antidote...

Russia is about to stage a countrywide Potemkin village farce and call it an election All facade. No substance 🤢🤮 My latest for the New York Post. nypost.com/2026/09/13/o...

The State of the European Union feels like some bizarro future Sci-fi world. Modern space-age parliament, a leader that shuffles between three languages, and a speech that sanely and astutely assesses issues, lays out ideas and weirdly acknowledges climate change and supports democracy. Terrifying!
