A vector navigation and inference architecture can construct universal cognitive maps for abstract reasoning
Bicanski proposes an algorithm and neural mechanisms for the iterative construction of abstract cognitive maps via non-local inference. Map positions are triangulated and memorized by a set of extant ...

1/N: Dear cognitive map fans, I’d like to share a model I’ve been working on for a while (clearing backlog :). I show how a vector navigation architecture (VNA) and a “positional inference network” (PIN) can build Universal Cognitive Maps (UCMs) for abstract spaces. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Your life saving clinical trail could be TERMINATED by the Trump administration. We scraped through the data and found that 50% of all clinical trials are at risk of being cancelled. It's time to talk about it and what you can do to stop this. 🧵 🧪
I am concerned that the explosion of AI in science will be the ultimate implementation of Brandolini's law... So that what scientists will increasingly be doing is chasing down potentially plausible answers without a way of verifying the underlying premises. FYI: Brandolini's law

And Now for Something Completely Different: A perspective on AI swarms from someone who actually knows something about collective behavior.
We can simulate fish schools or ants in ways that solve complex problems (gradient detection, bridge building, nest selection) but no one would create this weird soul/no-soul dichotomy to argue they these that multi-agent swarms of extremely simple rules are “thinking”.

Just out in Nat Neurosci: disentangling of neural odor manifolds in "olfactory cortex" of adult zebrafish after learning. Great work by Bo, Nesibe et al and wonderful collaboration with @sueyeonchung.bsky.social that fundamentally changed my view of olfactory cortex. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The first Danionella paper from the lab. Danionella cerebrum is transparent, so you can see all of the internal organs. But what sensory information are the organs sending to the brain? In our new preprint, Emily Bayer wanted to find out. 1/4 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Ultrastructural reconstruction of hundreds of neurons by volume EM revealed cell types and a precise glomerular organization in the zebrafish olfactory bulb. A heroic effort by Nila! Special thanks to Nila @michalwj.bsky.social and the whole team! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Deep anatomical and ultrastructural classification of neurons in the zebrafish olfactory bulb
Neuronal circuits in the olfactory bulb (OB) perform computations fundamental to pattern classification including a decorrelation and normalization of odor-evoked activity. These computations are medi...

New preprint by Tommaso: olfactory cortex (of zebrafish) represents not only odor information but also temporal context, and these multimodal representations are sharpened after learning. And check out Tommaso's new method for 2P imaging in awake adult zebrafish! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Joint experience-dependent representations of odors and temporal context in the zebrafish homolog of piriform cortex

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.
Finally out in @natneuro.nature.com! A forgotten memory isn't always gone. We show that forgotten memories persist as silent memory traces, can be recovered by reminders, and can even be reconstructed into false memories. Excited to finally share this work! www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Creating true and false memories from forgotten information in Drosophila - Nature Neuroscience

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.
AI labs buy, scan, shred millions of rare books
If you have retreated to physical books because the internet is too full of AI slop, bad news — now they’re shredding the books to feed their AI slop machines.

Just an absolute shout out to everyone out there who helped manufacture doubt around the question of this guy being a Nazi, particularly after the Nazi salute.
Tweet from Elon Musk: “Anyone who opposites remigration is a traitor” posted yesterday.
I co-sign this great summary from @dereklowe.bsky.social . The goal is to destroy academic science, and these are the reasons. And all the “gold standard” and “needs reform” and “not high risk” stuff is transparent bullshit to hide the ball on what they are doing.
