Synagogues pay for their own security. Building bollards and gates, installing cameras, etc., require capital campaigns or added membership dues. A police presence is not free. Plus synagogues train their members to volunteer as security guards. We do this because safety is not a choice.

A guy rammed his car through a door at Detroit’s largest synagogue and got out with a gun and was shot by security before he could massacre everyone inside. And yes all synagogues that can afford it have security. And yes it’s exactly because of situations like this that they do.
