Wrong Body

No next of kin.
Just me.
The last name in your orbit.
So I made the report.

I didn’t know
or I would’ve kept my mouth shut
and let the city swallow you whole.

I didn’t know they’d drag me in,
walk me past doors that never open for the living,
into a room colder than truth,
and pull back a sheet
with the casual ease of a morning ritual.

I didn’t know a face could swell like that,
skin stretched tight,
banana peel eyelids,
speckled with muddied veins.

I didn’t know a stranger’s death
could stick to my ribs
and rot there,
putrifying in dreams.

All I knew
was that it wasn’t you.
Not this time.
Not this body.

You were gone,
and the world didn’t twitch.
No answers.
No trace.
Just absence.

Sagittaria latifolia

Silence hangs as dense summer air
emptiness a lonely clenched jaw
humility for not choosing to be either
senselessly having found the flaw

Filed smooth a loose ambition
few then one loitered loopholes
a rubiless frictionless tension
infinitely factory farmed souls

Change marked in invisible ink
adjustments cleansed, processed
jotted between overflow links
demetamorphized core progress

Nutritional yeast a substitute
supplements for tree limbs
language exudes in multitudes
simply in braided crimps

Sacrificed drops for plant hostages
horizontally conjuring paint chips
hyperbolic sulking stamped postages
clinging to sunken pirate ships

Contemplative does it seem
unintelligible unfilter lens
incoherent aesthetic rambling
wherein pennies pass tense

The tolling of the worker's bell
Across atolls, rang through the dell
Uniting people from untold walks
To pay their #toll in community talks
Or put their well told words to use
They toil tirelessly against the ruse
Of tolling common land and bridge

Or take from us, our common stride
