Darryl Taft was a tech journalist who pursued his beat with a genuine interest in the people that made tech what it was. The world lost someone good today and it hits Baltimore right in the chest. 💔 I enjoyed every single interaction I had with Darryl. My condolences to everyone in his orbit. RIP

It has been criminally underreported but Kelsey Pfendler has just rowed solo across the Pacific Ocean from the US coast to Hawaii in record time. A 2,400-mile unsupported journey in 43 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes. Notably beating the Men’s record by 9 whole days.

I love the hope in @masnick.com's piece here (and appreciate being quoted), but I want to add an important bit of context — whether it's possible for LLMs to enable anything open to survive depends on who has power over those LLMs. Right now, that's fascists. Which is why the open web is in danger…

AI Might Be Our Best Shot At Taking Back The Open Web https://www.techdirt.com/2026/03/25/ai-might-be-our-best-shot-at-taking-back-the-open-web/

I now join the chorus of folks looking for a job. I’ve got some software and systems engineering expertise, some AI/ML expertise, and I’ve been in a business seat for the past few years, meaning I know a lot more about how GTM, sales, etc works than I did. Let me know if you’d like to talk.

You know, many of us said the post 9/11 War on Terror measures were Orwellian bullshit at the time, from DHS to ICE. The Patriot Act was chilling as well. Some of us objected vociferously. Perhaps we didn't have the mics or the power, but we remember 2001-2005 as a terrible time in this country.

A reminder that it's your last day for 2025 charitable giving. Food insecurity, homelessness, and reproductive health services are big on my list of targets but whatever yours are, now's the time to finish them if you haven't

Remember: When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them. When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips. ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.

i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides

EVERY house we looked at in altadena had a high fire risk, so we looked and bought in Pasadena even though there was less inventory. EVERY house i looked at in Altadena burned in Eaton, four weeks after we closed. Eaton missed our house by five blocks. the risk rating worked. shame it’s gone.

Lol, Zillow tried to rate the climate risks facing individual properties. The real estate industry *hated* it, precisely because it worked -- it made selling risky properties more difficult. So they rebelled & Zillow caved. Don't look up!

Wanted to look at the new line of Polk Audio speakers. Got about 5 pages into the site and got a Cloudflare block. I'm not using a VPN or anything else wonky. No more research into Polk for me. It's truly surprising how sensitive I am to being told I'm not wanted somewhere. I just go elsewhere. /1
