They're probably hoping you won't hear about this. But tomorrow in TX, Tarrant County officials meet to vote on a GOP plan to cut almost HALF of Election Day voting locations, plus 8 early voting locations, some of them on campuses. Not hard to guess why. fortworthreport.org/2026/07/30/t...
Tarrant County considers cutting 140 Election Day polling sites for November
County commissioners vote Aug. 4 on proposed reductions to the number of early voting and day-of sites for the midterms.

There Will Come Soft Rains by Ray Bradbury
The voice-clock sang, breakfast was ejected, but no doors slammed. The garage chimed and lifted its door to reveal the waiting car. The house sat alone in a city of rubble and…

If you're systematically overwhelmed, working harder isn't the answer - and you know that, because if it was going to work it would have by now. The question that gets you out: what would make next week better for future-me?
What would make next week better?
Credit: Flickr / Christopher Bowley Just about everyone gets overwhelmed sometimes, and many of us deal with that by working harder. This is a reasonable response to a single unexpected thing, or a bad week, but it's not the right response to systematic overwhelm. Then you need to stop asking the question "what do I do next" (or worse: "how am I going to do everything?!?") and ask a different one:

I think it's more a case of a market for lemons; online shopping created an economy in which people are only prepared to pay the lowest prices because they suspect they will only be shipped the lowest quality goods.
Online shopping eliminated these gatekeepers and disintermediated the market, allowing consumers to express their desires more directly. And it turns out that what people really want is cheap disposable goods, not more expensive but higher quality stuff that lasts a long time.
The thing when you're staring at the cat but mostly just into space, and the cat is staring back at you but both of its ears are turned out so it's clearly also staring into space

They have had tuberose at the farmers market the past two weekends and I will admit I do like getting a whiff of it
I love Talarico and hope he wins. But he’s already raised $70M On the flipside, control of critical state legislatures will come down to seats where candidates raise 0.1% of that. I’ve researched the highest leverage swing district candidates you should donate to secure.actblue.com/donate/donat...

In "Authorize, don't authenticate," I argue for the elimination of the login screen in applications that manage your personal data. You should be authorizing apps to access your data, not authenticating for the privilege of handing it over! blog.marcua.net/2026/07/31/a...
The hidden secret truth of software engineering is that all code is sin. If you build your dignity on sin you are truly lost brother
Me, personally, I consider it a pretty huge indignity to have an algorithm write my code then turn to others and say "here's my code".

This is kind of the risk of letting AI convince you it's done a thing you totally have no idea how to do eh

I cannot believe they're making another season of Ted Lasso, man I couldn't even get through the last season, that has aged like milk for me
Again, Trump is making you, personally, poorer and less safe, while permanently foreclosing options for you now and in the future. The scope of the harms is only growing.
I have never considered the act of taking notes (which I basically never do for other people but always do for myself) as "sensemaking" but that is exactly what it is. It's not the transcript, it's knowing what matters from the conversation and the group
Then they have all the transcripts (and the ai token bill) but no sensemaking. so they make another app — a layer that will make sense of all the useless transcripts. But of course sensemaking isnt just pattern spotting. It’s interpretation. AI cannot do either because AI cannot be curious
I feel like this should be set to a Jethro Tull soundtrack for some reason

If you've ever had the pleasure of being friends with a Texas public school teacher you'll be completely unsurprised to read this
"more teachers departed public school classrooms in Texas than at any point since at least 2007, the earliest year with state data...From 2020 to 2025, the state lost 35,000 teachers who would have stayed in the classroom...That’s equivalent to nearly 10% of the current teacher workforce."
