We see similar subsidies and rebates for polluting, extractivist companies in the Netherlands. Meanwhile they are cutting even more on social services, healthcare, and education to give it to the military industrial complex. 🫠

Luckily, this year we will give half a billion dollars to a company that has booked $10b in profit. I can't think of anything else that we could have done with that money.

“Being a thought leader does not automatically make one a professional writer" is the new slogan of the faculty, mentions the dean during the opening of the year, while he also tells staff of redundancies and gives them a bag of fortune cookies with said slogan. Mucho thought & leadership 🔭

Dean of Science at Stellenbosch University writes that although AI generates almost all the words for his articles (including this one): "AI did almost all of the writing. I remain the expert and the thought leader behind the piece." www.nature.com/articles/d44...

Just like the story I posted last night. Genie out of the bottle again. Flood the zone with an inherently harmful (to teens and everyone else) tool, then - how convenient - provide a “fix.” But the best fix: just don’t use it.

OpenAI Introduces ‘ChatGPT for Teens’ as Safety Concerns Grow (Gift Article)

The artificial intelligence start-up announced a chatbot mode that will automatically limit some conversations to better protect young users.

Politie-algoritme ‘voorspelde’ jarenlang misdaad.

Private equity is currently imploding. A historical accident, produced by low rates & tax subsidies. Meanwhile, the European Commission? Is consulting "to explore ways to make it easier for investors in private companies to sell on their stakes." EU financial policymaking is so depressing.

Screenshot from EU Commission website: "Targeted consultation on private equity exits

This consultation intends to explore ways to make it easier for investors in private companies to sell on their stakes."

Actually, one more - I feel like I should say this directly, so here goes. In the 90s and 00s, the groups I remember pursuing this strategy (hyperpublicize mugshots, Black crime statistics, etc) were Stormfront, the Klan, etc. Now it's the New York Times and the Telegraph. That is the story here.

Plenty to reflect about re: the Arday affair, but I'm going to repeat this one thing. The playbook the right used here is effective even though it's not especially sophisticated, as it relies on the audience to do the dirty work. I've been calling it "Trojan horse propaganda", let's go with that. 1/

If you're a biologist, especially one in a field that has a history of eugenics and racism (which absolutely includes my own field of evolutionary biology) and you choose to remain "neutral" as race science once again crawls out from under its rock, you are not in fact neutral.

Very good post, and when I have time I will defo check both books. My interpretation of Cleve's claims was that Walden had only gone once to an archive. But she spent a year researching. This was a gross omission/misrepresentation by Cleve, it's shitty.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...
