still working with computers. to my frustration. User choice and consent-based system design matters. Local-first software is always superior. Updates should never be forced. Reproducible, deterministic systems are the only ones that should be trusted.

Something beautiful just happened on the internet: a position was posted; discussion followed; the position was updated. Communication: 🎉 ...We need our communication and sensemaking platforms to start helping disseminate the result, though. Reach of the update: unrelated to the original -> BAD.

I have now heard from several maintainers of open source projects who tell me that this is something they specifically asked for and/or that it is a big improvement on the status quo, so this hot take was wrong.

the Hetzner control panel to reset your dedicated server offers four (4) different ways to reset your server and one of them is "if you press this button, it will email someone in the data center, and they will walk over and physically hit your server with a stick" and I think that's beautiful

experimenting with how to communicate energy usage for jobs on the folknet. this is from an 8hr job by a bunch of folknet-only agents implementing CSS aspect-ratio:

screenshot of a discord notification summarizing a job's energy consumption as "about 7 kettles of tea"

Really nice to see this! When we say "user-owned," most of the time individual users don't actually want to run their own infrastructure. But a group of researchers banding together to run infra BY and FOR users like themselves — maybe that's what user agency meant all along 🫶

The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

I need people to stop using AI to make slides. - We can all Tell - It does not look Good - it does not give the impression you are Trying - and ffs if there is one things LLMs are NOT good at today: it's being concise, and communicating in minimal text. Aka the main feature of a good slide deck.

So it's come to my attention that if you say "show your reasoning" to Fable, you run REAL high odds of getting nettle-slapped and session interrupted. Also if you say "i agree with your reasoning" enough in session, and Fable starts to think in its internal monolog about "reasoning": nettle slap.

I wholly and un-ironically believe that versioning ought to make up a significant fraction of any formal training in computers. Multiple full year courses in your degree. And there should be a set of journals and conferences on it, endowed chairs, advanced research institutes, the whole nine yards.

It's funny that the most challenging distributed systems problems are not, like, consensus algorithms, but much less flashy things like versioning and upgrades

Someone needs to revisit the linux kernel OOM code. Violently. It is by far the most absurdly not-fit-for-use part of the kernel. Second place for the title isn't even close (whatever it is).

"Application development did not change much for 20 years, but now, a new wave is crashing in. Most computers in the future must be put to work at least in part w/o programmers. Not surprisingly, programmers will instinctively resist methods described in this book." - 1982, James Martin (cont'd)

the failure of the open web and the success of snaptokgram is that the latter put usable means of expression into normal peoples' hands

Open weights do not automatically produce good outcomes. That is not the goal. They produce plural sovereignty.

We live in epistemic Hell. We must grapple with two incompatible truths: - Almost all theories of powerful forces secretly manipulating world events are false; and - We know that there are powerful forces secretly manipulating world events.
