That's what taxes are, man. That's the definition of taxes. "You are subsidizing things you might never use" man shut the fuck up. My taxes currently subsidize like oil company exec private jets, you think I'm upset at low-income people eating inexpensive bananas?

The most effective heuristic I've found to quickly show whether someone is a shitty person is to see what they think about homeless people. They're telling you who they really are. Those red flags have an undefeated record, e.g. Gavin Newsom. Wurman used an encampment lawsuit to burnish his rep.

Progress in cancer research has been one of the incredible areas of biomedical advancement over the past two decades. Many cancers which were absolute death sentences just a few years ago are now chronic, managed conditions. And this was only possible through NIH/NCI/NIAID research/funding.

I had a conversation recently in which I admitted to belief that programs can be "done" after which they just need ongoing maintenance / fixes / ports. That writing a new program can serve everyone better than constant overhauls to an old one. I know this is controversial, and that seems sad to me.

I agree with this so much. Every time people get all critical about the social function of shame (and even the legitimate self-critical, reflexive, not-meeting-my-own-standards function of shame) I wonder what exactly they have in mind to better serve that function. What else is moral condemnation?
