Taking over the world one microbe at a time. Taking myself not too seriously.

Long live the day I girl bossed too close to the sun and managed to get my email address on the main account for the entire university so every month I get everyone’s QIAGEN invoices for my entire university. 🤘

It’s a quintessential French experience when your institution is blockaded by protesting students. This is precisely what American students should have done when their institutions began capitulating to the Trump regime.

In the last couple of years, we've seen multiple critical collections (museums, herbaria) close. The IUCN--the global authority on the status of biodiversity--recently published on how important these kinds of facilities are in conservation. Every day, the dead are working to protect the living.

From collections to conservation: the indispensable role of natural history museums

The IUCN Species Survival Commission has published a Position Statement on the vital role of biological collections in biodiversity conservation: a formal acknowledgement that natural history museums,...

Exciting news: @uwgenome.bsky.social will be hiring for two tenure-track faculty positions this year, one open rank and one assistant professor. Both are “Genome Sciences” interpreted broadly so we welcome applicants working in a variety of fields and methods. Ad will be out shortly.

Just day drank with the grad students. We were all at a 5K fundraiser and I had already grabbed a table to manage food and beer and told them to join my friends so they could do the same. Gotta look out the kids, right? Gave one of them my wristband for more beer.

~Approximately no one in the general public knows because the leaders of the R1 research universities - whose budgets, programs, & personnel are entirely or significantly dependent on federal funding - have been totally absent from the public square in explaining & collectively protesting this.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

I see one positive change. At present, changes to IBC permit (eg. addition of BSL1 organism or even protein expression plasmid) requires the full IBC meet (which only happens monthly here). This change would allow one or a subset of IBC members to approve certain changes.

Me: "I like to dump the dry ice from shipments into the sink and add a bunch of water so it looks like I'm a mad scientist tinkering with forces beyond my understanding, spitting in the face of the gods with my intellectual hubris." Priest: "Okay, again; kind of weird, but not technically a sin"

Don't do this to your plumbing, because it can really mess it up, and this isn't my lab, but it's a sink filled with dry ice that is boiling over with CO2. A black lab bench with carboy of water next to the sink, and a centrifuge on the bench in fashionable "science beige".

#eldercare realities. Dad’s condo got packed today. Of course even with me telling him 5x to pack an overnight bag and put it in his car, I got back from class to find that they had packed ALL of his clothes and he had no PJs or shirts for tonight or tomorrow. 🤦🏻‍♀️

When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/kQdKbY1

Made the poor decision to watch "The Love Hypothesis" this weekend and if you have any experience in academic science environments I strongly urge you not to. If the author, as claimed, indeed has a PhD in neuroscience from an accredited university I can only conclude that they wrote it as rage bait
