I feel like the 21st century in general and social media in particular have created the facsimile/opposite of a beginner's mind while replicating its immediacy and innocence We are all the Uncarved Blockhead

Most obnoxious guy at the reptile house is the one who’s always an enclosure ahead of you. “Oh the spotted turtle is right there in the corner.” Shut the fuck up. I would‘ve found it.

what actually sells novels? mostly things that are out of the author's hands and formally not their business, like things publishers decide to spend money on, or how enthusiastically readers recommend the books to each other … seems to me like everything else is basically Fun Activities For Authors

having spent my entire career firmly wedded to yog's law, it's always bizarre to be reminded that there are writers out there spending money (this is a self-help/advice author, not a novelist, so that at least explains why they have money to spend)

Alt: "Wait, You Guys Are Getting Paid?" meme, except that in this case it's obviously wait you guys are paying?

Am still thinking about this, from this summer. (Sorry that it's a substack.) amychan.substack.com/p/i-spent-44...

Hey there. Some news! Contract's signed, so I'm happy to say I'll be back in the pages of @clarkesworldmagazine.com with a novelette, "Ludd Kid." Instant gratification. Indecipherable movies. Family estrangement. People that aren't people. Things slipping into decline. The usual light-hearted stuff.

Why is cafeteria pizza always the same? A square of dough with a scattering of cheese and pepperoni and a quiet voice whispering underneath it all as you chew explaining that if you give in, just a little, your life would be so much better. Why is that?

Someone told me a while back that every year they offer this to R.L. Stine and every year he politely declines so they can give it to someone who maybe needs it more than he does. If true, it really speaks to his humility as a writer and kindness as a human being. Don't know if it's true though.

Breaking News: The Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the Canadian poet and essayist Anne Carson. nyti.ms/4yCUebH

Today's announcements: after-school activities today will take place in flames, your parents have been notified of your intent to ask Stacy to the Homecoming Dance, and please ignore the body in locker 451. You will find the locker code written on the back page of your current textbook. Ignore it.

Statistically speaking there is at least one guy whose exposure to written culture ended with reading the Far Side cartoons that misheard a conversation this morning and genuinely believes that the Nobel in Literature went to Gary Larson. And that's okay.

Look, bullying is terrible and no one should be harassed or hurt for being different, but the rise of smug, obnoxious, nerds like Curtis Yarvin, Steven Miller and Ben Shapiro and the decline of swirlies is not a coincidence.

During college I worked for a few summers at a camp. About once per session we would set up these sort of maze/haunted houses for the kids. I loved helping out with those. One year I found this poster of Elvis that was on a transparent backing. Almost like a big slide or projector sheet.
