Exciting moment tonight at a horror writers’ panel where it struck me that the “you have to set your story in the past cos of mobile phones” era is over, cos now your phone will lie to you, mislead you, freak you out, let you down, and do all sorts of sinister uncanny shit.

You deserve kindness. You deserve to feel loved. You deserve happiness. You might not feel each of those things every day, but that doesn't make it any less true. You deserve to feel special, because you are xx

It's a shame that "defend your culture" always means "hate strangers different from you" and never "enact anti-pollution laws so that you can go fishing with your grandkids the way your grandpa taught you."

I love not using AI. I love looking at art made by human beings, sculpting kaleidoscopic mushrooms out of clay, learning a new skill from a real person, playing with cats, spotting bats silhouetted in a crepuscular sky. Not using AI is very fun.

this is a sith lightsaber, from the war. I keep it on a shelf right next to my stormtrooper armor and imperial officer’s uniform. I’ve even got a verified chunk of the death star from yavin. I’m just a collector. I just think the history is interesting. no, I don’t have any rebel stuff

I'm sitting in a presentation where someone referenced the quote, "Do one thing every day that scares you," and I'm like, well, I have generalized anxiety disorder so I'm wayyy ahead of you, Eleanor Roosevelt.

"Just self-publish" is not an "easy" solution. Self-publishing is hard. It requires way more time than I have. For me, the agent and trad/small press model works great. But again, it ain't one size fits all, folks. You need to find what works for you.

I don’t care if you’re a relative, a fantasy novelist, or an elected official, transphobia is manufactured outrage and transphobe are trash. None of America’s problems are cause by trans people. None. But a LOT are caused by bigots.

Today's advice: try and choose your rage. You can't fix everything, and you can't make a difference if you're in flames over everything at once. Start where you can make a difference. Build a community. Lean on others. Raging alone means you'll burn out entirely.

"Bluesky is awesome now, for how long?" I mean, look, all things change and end, we will all die, earth will be uninhabitable in a billion years, then the sun will expand and destroy the planet, and the universe will die a slow death of proton decay. But BEFORE THAT, let's make this place fun, okay?
