Every once in a while I have to do remind myself that my years in academia did result in something and I grab a paper copy of a publication 📖📚 it’s nice
The Peace of Wild Things By Wendell Berry I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

My genuinely non controversial take is that if you're signing an open letter of support for Cofnas you're either a racist or want to be admired in racist spaces.
This entire disgusting situation with Arday has shown the horrible priorities of a society built for the ruling class. Our press isn't free, and it is used solely and exclusively to pursue the interests of the ruling class which owns it.
Cambridge University should have known better, Fleet Street should have known better, the people hungrily absorbing every bit of news about it, making newsrooms feel like they had to keep going with it as a story, should have known better, horrible horrible horrible
Oil giants made $93bn in profits in just 3 months while wildfires tear through Greece, Spain and France. Polluters profit, people pay. Destroyed homes, livelihoods, and an €822bn climate inaction bill across the EU since 1980. We need to move beyond fossil fuels. www.theguardian.com/business/ng-...

Worked on this wildfire investigation for the last number of months with colleagues across the EU. To publish today is, sadly, very timely. While Ireland doesn’t experience the ‘mega fires’ we see in Spain etc, the damage caused to protected sites here is actually far greater than most of Europe.
NEW INVESTIGATION: Despite escaping the 'mega fires' seen in countries such as Spain and Greece, Ireland actually has one of Europe’s highest rates of wildfire overlap with protected nature sites, we can reveal

I now fervently believe this. Relatedly, I think celebrating good news and embracing joy are equally radical. You have to remember what you’re fighting for. We cannot sustainably organize around sorrow.
I’m coming to understand that maintaining hope is radical.

Today marks the start of my last month as a postdoc in Finland. As much as I would like to say I managed to secure myself another position, the (academic) job market is rough right now. I’m officially #OpenTowork. It’s not all bleak as I'm moving back to NL - and my partner and our cats (1/5)
A whine I need to get out before it chokes me: I'm on the job market (aren't we all) in NL where academia is falling apart (isn't it everywhere). Since defending TT positions have disappeared. At first there were a few teaching only jobs, but those are now mostly "junior" lectureships for grads

What a crushing loss. She was so brilliant. As many others are saying here, if you haven't read Persepolis, do it as soon as you are able. Her generous, witty, humanist, nuanced vision is more relevant now than ever. www.france24.com/en/culture/2...

Incredible operation to save invaluable heritage materials. It really says something about the nature of Israel's war against the Palestinians that an organisation founded to support refugee welfare also has to undertake such efforts to preserve the records of their existence.
