#USA vs #BEL World Cup round of 16 coming soon! I made a weather impact preview for @weatherapplied.com about how the weather will affect ball flight during the game. It's not the most weather-impacted game of the tournament, but there's some ball movement happening. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IZW...

With high winds in the forecast, Shinnecock Hills should be an especially interesting wind test. The course routing turns players into different wind angles throughout the round, creating a very different test from hole to hole. Great breakdown from @gabbyherzig.bsky.social and @theathletic.com
Why is Shinnecock Hills the gnarliest U.S. Open test? It starts with triangles

This is why @weatherapplied.com puts sensors inside ballparks and doesn't just rely on weather service data: there's currently 12 foot difference in fly ball distance between the west side of San Francisco and the east side just from temperature alone.
Noon update: Mid-60s at the beach and mid-90s in the Mission District. Yikes!
Las Vegas Ballpark isn't modeled for @weatherapplied.com, so we can't calculate last night's wind impacts, but the elevation is 3,000 ft (The Strip is 2,100) and the temp was over 90 F. That combo adds ~26 feet of distance to a HR compared to 70 F at sea level. Some rules of thumb can be found here:

Matt Olson! 49 degree launch angle, the highest on a home run in MLB this season Just 3 over-the-fence HR have had a higher launch angle under Statcast (2015) Related: it was wind-aided, blown out 17 ft & pushed 29 ft right, per @weatherapplied.com
Gusts are expected to be so strong in Sacramento on Sunday that flyballs in the Giants-A’s game could be pushed 115 feet toward home plate, according to @weatherapplied.com. It would be the biggest deflection WAM has measured since 2023, when it partnered with MLB to track weather at all stadiums.
Strong gusts in Sacramento expected to make for interesting Giants-A’s game Sunday
Flyballs in Sunday’s game between the A’s and San Francisco Giants at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento could be pushed more than 100 feet toward home plate, if forecast wind speeds hold.

Windy day at Wrigley! Brandon Lowe’s grand slam was blown out 38 ft, creating a home run, per @WeatherApplied Again, they all count!
This +65 ft is the most distance added by wind on a wind-aided homer in @WeatherApplied database (last 4 seasons)
422 ft homer here from Oneil Cruz! This ball was blown out 65 (!!!) ft by wind, creating a homer, per @WeatherApplied 111.0 mph 41 degree launch angle 83.1 mph bat speed They all count!
Ian Happ gets one back from the wind! This ball was blown out 35 (!!) ft by wind and pushed 8 ft right, creating a home run, per Statcast + @WeatherApplied They all count !!!
Yesterday, Ian Happ hit an absolute tank for a home run. 109 off the bat. 32 deg LA. ... except, he didn't. Thanks to our friends at @weatherapplied.com we know that the wind cost him *113 feet* of distance -- which is now the largest stop in the data. --> www.mlb.com/news/how-ian...
113 ft of distance but only 6 ft sideways: that's nearly a pure headwind. Between the LF Wrigley Rooftops building (~70 ft tall) and the LF scoreboard (~86 ft), the only wind blockage is the bleachers (~27 ft) and some trees on N Kenmore Ave. The ball and the 30 mph wind met head on in that gap.

Levi’s Stadium is forecast to be warmer than both teams’ home stadiums at kickoff. Warmer air = lower density = longer carry. Rule of thumb: ~1/2 yard per 10°. That’s roughly +2 ft vs Lumen and +7 ft vs Gillette at Levi’s. Physics is always in play. #SuperBowlLX #weatherapplied #playthewind

Unusual missed FG by Green Bay before the half because of wind and a leftward ball tilt/spin axis. * With no wind and a neutral spin, it has distance, but misses wide right * With actual spin and no wind, it's not wide, but misses short * With actual spin/wind, it has distance, but misses left.
Packers @ Bears — Wild Card Forecast: W winds 10–20 mph. Gusts up to 28mph. Classic barrier effect at Soldier Field. Near field level, kicks drift opposite of the prevailing wind. 🏈 FG to north end zone: pushed left (slight tailwind) 🏈 FG to south end zone: pushed right (slight headwind)

Windy day in Seattle for Rams @ Seahawks. Our @weatherapplied.com model predicts a much bigger impact in the north side of the field. The south side has both vertical and horizontal eddies that result in dead spots, like the calm in the eye of a hurricane. Strongest winds in the north side end zone.
