To be honest, I’m optimistic, even though I really wasn’t a fan of running this measure in a non-general election. Our big Spokane Together measures last fall increased their vote totals in the days after the election, and I do think that’s possible here, though less so than usual with the fires.

Proposition 1––which extends and expands Spokane Transit service for another 20 years––is a nail-biter. Yes: 31,153 (50.38%) No: 30,686 (49.62%) It needs 50% + 1 to pass.

Okay, HERE WE GO! Here’s a look at the primary election results in Spokane County. I’m skipping to cover my highest-priority measures/races first. Remember that this is just the first evening of ballot drops. Results will become much clearer by the end of the week.

Abdul El Sayed's open-mindedness on the question of how to actually resolve the question of Palestine is one of the best indicators of his overall intelligence and sincerity. Policymakers in DC should adopt a rights-based approach which prioritizes ending the occupation and apartheid systems.

El-Sayed: "I believe in equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination, for Palestinians and Jewish Israelis alike... If that’s 2 states, I’m for it. If it’s 1 state, I’m for that. If it’s this 'land for all' model, ... or whatever they decide." www.newyorker.com/news/the-new...

The Old Trails Fire began in one of the areas with the highest wildfire risk in Spokane County, and it spread northeast to devastate the neighborhood with Spokane’s second-highest wildfire risk.

The man whom police allege started the Old Trails Fire will appear in Spokane County Superior Court at 1:30pm. The affidavit of facts alleges that at least three witnesses saw this man along the BNSF tracks north of Airway Heights where the fire apparently originated.

BREAKING: This is gobsmacking. An arrest––for arson––has been made in the Old Trails Fire, which destroyed more than 700 homes in the Spokane area. A DNR fire investigator was able to locate the origin to w/in a 10 sq m area. The fire was started with nothing more than a butane lighter or match.

The Spokane fire conspiracy theories are almost identical to the Altadena fire conspiracy theories. These people have no understand of how fire works, how science works, or why some things burn. I'm writing a book chapter about it, but the people who need to read it don't read books.

The internet is filled with really dumb people who right now think the fires in Spokane WA were fake because the houses burned but trees didn’t. What they’re forgetting is that dead, thin, dry wood burns. Wet, dense, living wood is harder to burn. Old living pine and house vs fire: house loses.

Neighborhoods that burned in Spokane—like Five Mile and North Indian Trail—are *located in historic fire corridors.* No amount of infrastructure investment, structure hardening, or vegetation clearing can make those places fully safe. We need to think twice about building in these types of areas!

Urban firestorms like the one that devastated Spokane Saturday have been growing more common because of increased development in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) and climate change. In this post, I document 9 such fires since 2016 in the U.S. yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/08/urba...

If you have not yet returned your ballot, please get it in a dropbox by tomorrow at 8pm. Be sure to vote: – Yes for Buses on Proposition 1 – Nate Powell for Congress in CD-05

I get that in times of crisis, people seek comfort in convenient and sometimes conspiratorial answers to existential questions, but this is just AI data center psychosis.

The idea that Pete Buttigieg is qualified to be president has got to be one of the most patently ridiculous delusions that has been expressed in the past 20 years of American politics.
