Speculative fiction fans, can you *please* stop using YA as a way to insult adult fiction? YA isn't devoid of subtext or descriptions. It isn't lesser. If you notice those trends in adult, it's not because YA trends have infected it. And if you notice that in YA, then you need to read better books.

I want every person who has previously struggled with a restrictive eating disorder to stand up right now, go to the kitchen, and eat a piece of cheese. Or a cookie. Or something else that brings you joy. There are some tough images out there right now, if you’re in recovery like I am. I see you. 🫶🏻

“The forces we are up against have made peace with mass death. They are treasonous to this world and its human and non-human inhabitants.”

The rise of end times fascism | Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor

The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them

The key paragraph from @naomiaklein.bsky.social & @astra.bsky.social's powerful piece describing the urgency of our present moment. They are right, and we better move quickly.

To move forward with focus, we must first understand this simple fact: we are up against an ideology that has given up not only on the premise and promise of liberal democracy but on the livability of our shared world – on its beauty, on its people, on our children, on other species. The forces we are up against have made peace with mass death. They are treasonous to this world and its human and non-human inhabitants.

The perfect storm is brewing here rn. I’m in the midst of the most hardcore edit I’ve ever done, 2 months after deciding to pull my kid out of daycare due to health issues/being hospitalized over Christmas. Sooo now 3x a week I am parenting all day and writing all night (jk I fall asleep by 7pm) 🫠

Thinking a lot about Alysa Liu and her joy today. About why we pursue such difficult things because that passion reminds us why we’re alive. After a year that completely turned my life upside down, I’ve reconnected with the JOY of writing. I don’t have it in me to FIGHT for it anymore. It just is. 🖤

Here's the most insidious thing about Tylenol-gate: It's the only pain reliever pregnant people are allowed to take. You take that away, they have no relief, they can't function, can't go to work... and then the men get to say "WELP there it is boys that's why they only make $.70 on the dollar!"

Reading through One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This a second time with a pencil in hand and I really gotta say it’s standing out to me even more this round that this book is saying some piercingly real shit about much more than Gaza and genocide

Whatever late capitalism is, it seems to be careening into this embrace of growth by negation. Through that prism, it's hard not to see the advances in something like artificial intelligence less driven by technological breakthroughs as by a society that has, over years, over decades, become normalized to a greater and greater magnitude of both loneliness and theft, such that a sputtering algorithm badly trained on the stolen work of real human beings might be celebrated with a straight face as something approximating humanness. Under this ordering, it is not some corporation's increasing capacity for better that drives the extractive world, but everyone else's increasing tolerance for worse.

so ig really spooked me by sharing my location w/o my consent, SO I’m going to be posting there a little less often and trying to grow my community over here 💙 Also thinking I should commit to a free newsletter/email list as new projects approach. What service do y’all use for those if you have em?
