Testimony of a Mudlark Testimony of a Mudlark or What the Mudlark Saw on An October Morning to give it it's full title, is a curious work, published in 1856 or thereabouts by a now-defunct printer, in a limited run of a few dozen copies. The slim volume purports to be the statement of a London mudlark - never named - arrested for the murder of a young girl, who is not identified in the text itself save by the initials 'NJ'.

A Year of Mystery Kickstarter

Another week, another Kickstarter. This time around, its Belanger Books' campaign to fund Sherlock Holmes: A Year of Mystery 1891 and 1892. I happen to have stories in both volumes - "Serpents Tooth" in 1891 and "The Lord of the Sheepfolds" in 1892. Both stories feature not Holmes and Watson, but gossipmonger Langdale Pike and his bodyguard, Harrison Stickle. Pike is one of the innumerable side characters who appear offscreen in the Holmes canon. In Pike's case, he was mentioned only once, in "The Adventure of the Three Gables", and was masterfully played by Peter Wyngarde in the Granada Television adaption of the story.

Grim (1996)

This one is going to be brief, because frankly, there's not much to say about Grim (1996) , other than it's bad. And not in a 'so bad it's good' sort of way, but just in a 'it's tedious' sort of way. Boring. It's boring. The characters are boring, the narrative is boring and the eponymous Temu Rawhead Rex that everything revolves around is also boring - which is probably the most damning thing about the film. If the monster is boring, what are you even doing? The annoying thing is there's a lot of potential here: a distinctly European-style ogre imprisoned in a West Virginia mine is a wild concept.

Vampire Circus (1972)

Vampire Circus (1972) is one of the better Hammer films, if we're going by sheer audacity. It's more of a nightmare fairy tale than the various and sundry Dracula films, or even the Karnstein films, like Twins of Evil (1971). There's an unsettling dreaminess about it that continues throughout the film right up until the ending. Like a fairy tale, you probably already know how it's going to go, but the pleasure is in the journey, not the destination. As far as plots go, this one is simple: a vampire nobleman swears vengeance as he is dispatched, promising that his killers and their children will suffer, and then some years later, a circus rolls into the village, which has been isolated due to plague.
