So, every so often a reader will email me or contact me on social media or what not, and ask why I did something or didn't do another thing, or just ask me to go into more detail about a piece of work or an off-hand remark I made in an interview. While I normally answer those in the medium the question arrived in, there are always a few that I feel need a bit more breathing room - or get asked so often that I feel the need to write something I can just link to.

Today's review is the 1972 Hammer classic, Vampire Circus! It's got Darth Vader in it!

Vampire Circus (1972)

Vampire Circus (1972) is one of the better Hammer films, if we're going by sheer audacity. It's more of a nightmare fairy tale than the various and sundry Dracula films, or even the Karnstein films, like Twins of Evil (1971). There's an unsettling dreaminess about it that continues throughout the film right up until the ending. Like a fairy tale, you probably already know how it's going to go, but the pleasure is in the journey, not the destination. As far as plots go, this one is simple: a vampire nobleman swears vengeance as he is dispatched, promising that his killers and their children will suffer, and then some years later, a circus rolls into the village, which has been isolated due to plague.

yeah, this is a guy who could write a novel that is totally indistinguishiable from his other novels while interned as an enemy alien by vichy france. yeah, this is a guy who really could make axis radio propaganda by accident, without realizing what he was doing.

Another Wednesday, another ramble on my current works in progress...

WIP Wednesday Plunking

It's been a while since I talked about what I'm working on at the moment. Long story short, it's a lot of stuff I can't talk about in specific terms. Ain't that always the way? Still, in the interests of self-promotion, I figure I should keep you folks up to date. So, in general terms, I'm writing a tie-in novel for an IP I've never written for before, as well as doing some background work for two different game companies, both of which I have worked for in the past. I'm also in talks to write a sequel to a novel that came out last year, as well as negotiating some reprint rights.

SCTV is on Netflix now, apparently, and it's pretty great. I've only ever seen it in bits and pieces, so getting to watch whole episodes is illuminating. The concept is weird, the cast is fantastic and the reoccurring characters are wonderful.

It is possibly older even than the offices of the Royal Occultist, supposedly having been formed when London was Londinium. According to what few sources from that time remain, the first iteration of the Tunnel Authority was created not long after the Roman Empire signed the Treaty of Pompelo with the Folk Below.

Today's review is - oof - The Pyramid (2014). It's...not great.

The Pyramid (2014)

I...really wanted to like this one. To find some nugget of goodness in its cold, black tomb of a script. Mostly because I'm a mark for mummy movies. No matter how tedious, how nonsensical, I can usually find something - anything - to enjoy. But 2014's The Pyramid defeated me. It's a pile of horror tropes, assembled haphazardly and with no perceivable affection or love for the genre. The plot makes little sense, and while there is a germ of a nice idea there - something inhuman and awful trapped in a hidden pyramid - it never goes anywhere.
