i once sat in my ambulance with a patient for 10 hours because there were no ER beds because there were no beds available anywhere in the hospital we ran through every O2 tank we had and the hospital was so low on O2 tanks that they couldn’t give us a new one

We opened an ICU that had been shuttered for well over a decade so that a hospital that has 18 MICU beds could fit 46 patients on ventilators

I work with women all the time who allow their husbands to rape them to avoid a beating. Who clean and cook and keep their children quiet to avoid them all being killed. So yes.

There are only three possible futures: a) everyone in the Trump admin goes to jail, rule of law partially restored; b) Dems retaliate in full, and maybe that's a deterrent; c) neither (a) nor (b), so lawless authoritarianism wins again, and when Republicans regain power they ramp it up even more.

By effectively putting our ideas and positions on paper and improving upon them, we not only learn how to communicate but how to think critically and effectively. If this is gone, what are they going for?

at its best (which i appreciate is not every writing class) teaching students to write helps them realize their thoughts are worthwhile enough to memorialize. it teaches democratic participation in society. (i have many long song-and-dances i can give about the various delights of writing)
writing centers are fantastic places for students where they get assistance on the hard work of writing. writing is thinking. learning to write -- and learning to write when it is very very hard -- is a vital skill for the future. those i have met who work at these places are the best people.
This is one of the most absurd decisions by higher ed administrators that I can recall in recent (or even longer) memory. This is an absolute, irrefutable signal that the leaders of Harvard puts no value in the student experience of LEARNING. It's a joke and should be seen as hugely discrediting.

This is so everyone has carte blanche to use AI in writing. You cut the staff saying it’s for budget consolidation purposes, ergo you stop teaching the skill, so then the case is there to offload a skill to an AI agent. Welcome to 21st century academia. Oh but student fees are up.

“It means something is closing. Something is ending. It means that the qualifications she (@janerosenzweig.bsky.social) has, which are in how to teach undergraduates how to write, are no longer meaningful at Harvard,” she said. Yuck. The heart of college today should be teaching how to write/think.
