Today in #PlayingJapan, our Genpei War (team vs. team) karuta battle was fun, but the hanafuda cards were the big hit! Some students are planning to get some Nintendo decks for upcoming family holidays. 😁

#PlayingJapan class was a blast! The emperor has favored a few discerning students of the Way of Incense & Pokemon aficionados. Today's Genjikō answer is the Tale of Genji Chapter 28, "Nowaki" 野分 or "The Autumn Typhoon," which is apt for the season & the weather in both Japan & Moscow, ID today. ⛈️

Tomorrow’s #PlayingJapan class is dedicated to the games played by Japan’s nobility. We’ll play Pokemon kai awase (shell matching), Genjikō (an incense game), & Go. Since we’re not allowed to set things on fire on campus (FINE IG 😅), I’m balling in a budget w/ mini glass jars & Japanese tree oils.🌿

Last tour & lecture day for this group of #Smithsonian Journeys “Eternal Japan” travelers. Ending on a fun note in Kyoto w/ a KitKat buffet & 8am lecture on the history of manga & anime, complete w/ Chōjū giga emaki demonstration thanks to a replica I happily picked up in the Tokyo National Museum 🙏
