Let me take a minute to tell you how bonkers this is. The first election I worked was (I think) 2008, before there was really any advance voting. At every election, if you weren't on the roll, we let you cast a special vote and then worked out if you were eligible afterwards. Two reasons: 1/2

The Electoral Commission has told staff to turn away voters who aren't on the printed roll and who say they're unenrolled, but has no plans to count how many people will be affected. newsroom.co.nz/2026/08/03/t...

“The Electoral Commission has told staff to turn away voters who aren’t on the printed roll and who say they’re unenrolled, but has no plans to count how many people will be affected.” So nice to see democracy in action, nothing to worry about here, love NZ’s accessible and clear election process.

The Opposition says people who think they're not enrolled should lodge special votes rather than being turned away from voting entirely.

I've just booked a ticket for the first look at Maungawhau station. Had to wait in a queue, starting at 300 and something, for 13 minutes. Seems like the CRL is going to be popular with locals.

This is what most enrages me about him. He really knows nothing about what it is like to run a business. He's just part of the rentier/managerial class who think they are entrepreneurs & should be lauded as such. Worse he's deeply incurious & latches onto the latest fads which fit his world view.🤬

Luxon’s latest jibes at small business owners that we need to be “adults” about our businesses & radically retool etc. How do you find 300 extra kids a term we lost when they have moved out of your area & can’t afford your product with all the job losses in our region? What money bro?

Heads up any freelancers who have written for the Washington Post in the past - I’ve just had a letter from them noting that a database of vendor/contractor info including financial details has been accessed in a hack 😬

It could be a foggy morning tomorrow for many parts of the upper North Island, including Auckland 👀 Commuters might want to leave a little extra time in the morning to take it slow while travelling to work 🚗🚴

There's a part in the book "Careless People" where the author beats Zuck at Settlers of Catan, and he is absolutely wrecked by it. Someone pulls her aside to explain everyone else has been letting him win for years. I think about this a lot re: why tech bros think everyone will love AI chatbots.

People who spiral out overusing LLM chatbots are really just experiencing the kind of brain-damaging stream of unconditional validation that’s always been the norm for the hyper-wealthy, which explains a lot.
