not that research is really needed but i once did a study with f/f (femslash) fic writers. all were adults (23 to 49 yr). most were fully immersed in queer communities. several were married. some with kids. shame was sometimes part of their story but always overshadowed by fun and community

"How could I, an adult, read fan fiction?" — A sentence I read in a major publication just now. These articles could stop whenever we want them to. It would be quite simple. Everyone would just need to agree to it.

Kids get to have secrets, an identity arc, a hidden world that's just for them, a series of letters just between them and their best friend, a phone conversation no one needs to listen in on, a device that they can eventually configure for themselves, and a sexuality. Because I got to have these.
