the people clamor for my wisdom on large language models. what do I think the discourse overlooks? Large language models are maps of how language is used. Setting aside the chatbot interfaces, it's useful to ask, "What are maps good for? What can't they do well? What choices do they take away?"
you can't make Blazing Saddles today because it has in fact been made and people would say "this is the script for Blazing Saddles, wtf." This is also my theory of reception. The Odyssey is right there; read it! You won't regret it! BUT: people have been remixing the Odyssey since it was written.

the multitudes keep asking me about the Amarna period. look, I won't pretend the Amarna period has the most dramatic chariot warfare. but it probably has the most interesting chariot warfare.
That said while we are Odyssey posting: once again I rec Wrath Goddess Sing by Maya Deane which fucking ruled and did not get the positive attention it deserved.

next Odyssey retelling needs Helen dosing everyone with happy-while-you-talk-trauma drugs from Egypt, then ensuing guided talk therapy. Honestly would have fit well into the Nolan movie--if Nolan had let Helen be weirder, her marriage a strange postapocalyptic partnership to stem the bleeding.
You all may not have heard since I talk about it so rarely, but I wrote a novel. It's very good. Of course I would say that, but if I hadn't written it, I would still be obliged by hater's code to admit that that that uppity-ass quirk chungus bitch actually wrote a great novel.

Not sure about director, but I know I only want the Iliad on film (again) if it’s actually Wrath Goddess Sing.

i adore this book, i recommend it. extravagantly generous, wide-awake, beautiful, ugly. "holy fuck" and "oh god, no" both things i said aloud while reading.
