The pope taking a heroic stance against machine intelligence makes a lot of sense when you consider that machine intelligence has a lot in common with classical demonology. A convenient sycophantic servant can be summoned at will to help you with minor tasks, but it comes at a cost to your soul.

I was meant to be at the Lire en Poche festival in Gradignan this weekend but I've had to pull out for health reasons (I seem to have caught the nasty vomiting bug that's been going around). Apologies to any French readers who were looking forward to getting their books signed!

I run a D&D game set in 1918, in which the dastardly Hun are summoning dragons to try and win the war. One of my players, my friend Hugh, plays a trench-raiding barbarian with a wild boar painted on the side of his Sopwith Camel. My mother - a quilting extraordinaire - made him this amazing quilt!

Quilt no. 180 - my son asked me to make this for his friend’s birthday - he’s into WWI, dragons, wild boar and his family tartan! Quite the combination 🤭

I'm an author with historically bad mental health. In the past four years my MH has improved dramatically due to meds and therapy and having great friends. I still fall into the trap sometimes of thinking that I can ignore self-care as long as the writing's going well. I'm here to say DON'T DO THAT.

Bury my Heart (Galehaut Laid to Rest) "And Lancelot himself lay his companion to rest inside the tomb. After he had laid Galehaut down, he kissed him three times on the mouth in such agony that his heart nearly leapt out of his chest." Lancelot Part IV (Lancelot-Grail /Vulgate Cycle) #Arthuriana

I just read a third or possibly fourth news article where the reality of an 'AI has discovered something marvellous!' story turns out to be GenAI somehow accessed material it had no permissions for, which was the outcome of an expert's years of work, and presented it without attribution. GenAI lies.

I'm beyond proud of my good pal @padswa.bsky.social. He's one of the writers I most admire, because of his determination to pick himself up and keep writing brilliant fiction even after setbacks and rejections. I'm sure DRAGONFLY's going to be a huge success. www.thebookseller.com/rights/harpe...

Oh do fuck off. I'm going to start communicating by passing secret notes to people, literally old school. I should not have to spend every moment outside my home being observed and recorded by CCTV, pervert glasses, influencers desperate for love, and now Apple Watches. I have a right to privacy

I've been doing a lot of drawing recently, and my heart goes out to illustrators everywhere. It has become insanely difficult to find decent reference images on search engines without being drowned in uncanny valley AI slop.

The battle to keep global heating from passing the agreed 1.5-degree threshold has been lost. This should be an era when human ingenuity works to save the planet from catastrophe. Instead the tech broligarchy is busy embarking upon ludicrous AI data centre “infrastructure” fuelled by coal and gas.
