There’s a lot of structural things enmeshed with $$ and business in policing that would take time to untangle and change but not meeting protest with brutal oppression is something mayor Mamdani could change immediately without any legislation, budgeting, etc etc.

Mamdani Is Facing Heat Over the NYPD. Here’s What He Should Do.

The mayor is being given a series of false choices over his public-safety agenda. But there is another way forward.

“The safest communities have low crime not because of intensive policing but because people’s everyday needs are being met.”

An interesting “whole government approach” (a Mamdani phrase) to policing. Vitale’s suggestion on how to handle protests in lieu of SRG is very close to what NYPD is almost doing, which is to deploy Community Affairs cops first and have SRG on standby.

Mamdani’s approach to the NYPD is not what reform advocates expected

Public safety advocates are growing frustrated with the mayor’s hands-off approach to policing.
