We're now on day 83 of record breaking daily global sea-surface temperatures. There's still an outside chance that this year could break the all-time daily record set back on April 24, 2024. The Climate Casino is taking the Over.

Studys of bat use of restored farm ponds in Norfolk, eastern England led by the brilliant @davidjd.bsky.social of our partner @uclgeography.bsky.social. Overgown ponds restored by scrub & mud removal are massive hot spots for bats in the farmed landscape. Water = life 🦇
Facts confirmed this week: ▶️Top driver of deforestation globally: beef ▶️Top driver of biodiversity loss globally: beef and dairy ourworldindata.org/what-has-dri... and www.universiteitleiden.nl/en/news/2026...
What has driven deforestation in the 21st century?
Agriculture has been the main driver of deforestation, but this has been concentrated in only a few commodities: mostly beef, palm oil, soy, and forestry products.

Another installment of the 'native woodlands don't burn' debunking. Birch and oak are made of wood, and if they're dry enough (like in a drought) then they'll burn. And if they're on peat, they'll burn all the more. Just to reiterate, this is a fen. A famously wet habitat. On fire.
Firefighters remained at Holme Fen overnight after a major wildfire was brought under control. Councillor Simon Bywater has praised emergency crews and urged people to stay vigilant during the continuing dry weather. 📷 Terry Harris/CambsNews #cambridgeshire www.cambsnews.co.uk/major-holme-...

Terrible this illegal persecution continues, but encouraging that the conservation release org. is chaired by a farmer, and the eagle was saved by gamekeepers.

Nest protection an emergency room conservation intervention that is unlikely to be scalable to reverse declines, but may prevent local extinction and thus warranted. Ultimately we need to stop giving generalists like Great-spotted Woodpeckers a leg up by feeding them #Ornithology
The last Willow Tit nest of the season now fledged, successfully protected from Great Spotted Woodpecker predation. No GSW predation in protected nests this year, in stark contrast to 100% predation rate by GSW in unprotected nests. Very promising results.

The #peat at this site was historically cut for fuel, leaving bare eroding 'peat pans'. We used a digger for reprofiling then got to work by hand, with lots of help from volunteers 🙏 It will be several years before we really start to see the impact of the work, but initial signs are promising 😊
This is such well-deserved recognition for Mary's tireless work, bringing people together to help curlews and to connect with the natural world.
