One more sick indictment of Russia's regime, full of war criminals. A teenager, in shorts, clearly not military, was hunted down for fun, by a Russian drone pilot in Kherson. What's more the animals proudly publish the terror. It's not known what happened to the boy.
I knew that we all lose our mental sharpness as we get older. I just didn't expect it to progress so quickly.

Subsidizing used car loans is stupid, but in terms of aggregate harm to the economy, taxing all capital gains as ordinary income while simultaneously raising the corporate income tax rate is obviously worse.

If you work for your money, the tax code should reward you as much as someone whose money works for them. We would equalize the treatment of investment income and wages, raise the corporate tax rate, and close loopholes.

I just found out that Telus, the incumbent telephone company in BC and Alberta, has a subsidiary that turns old telephone exchanges into multi-family rentals, and I don't know what I think about this. (Why don't they just sell the sites?)

The GTA6 hacker was not sentenced to life imprisonment. He has an indefinite mental health order. Luigi Mangione has not been sentenced, and Federal guidelines suggest he will get 24-30 years, though he may get life. And it's not yet clear if Mangione will face a second trial on state charges.
My prediction is that this will result in a bunch of people stealing ebikes in order to sell them to the police.

I think "accounting fraud" and "accounting/legal fiction" are distinct. There is no true distinction between a payroll tax that used to lower external borrowing when paying for current expenditures and one that goes into general revenue to pay for current expenditures in lieu of external borrowing.
George Pearkes@peark.es · 2w agoJust to be clear, Social Security is not accounting fraud (obviously). Its structure has to be adjusted over time for changing demographics, of course, but it's a completely sustainable approach to income security for the elderly.
