!!! brands keep pushing the "our products can replace professional hearing/visual aids" line and then lock off those actual accessibility features or make them clearly lower priority wouldn't be surprised if destroying the actual market for dedicated accessibility aids was part of the plan

One thing we found recently in this regard that kinda surprised me is that, after All This, there are in fact more self-IDed "woke" than "anti-woke" Americans. But less surprising is that the largest bucket remains the "what the hell are you talking about" Americans yougov.com/en-us/articl...

My theory on this is that most people aren’t mad at “woke” or whatever, they just experienced an upheaval of society through COVID and its aftermath and can’t actually put their finger on what’s bothering them. Woke is just a scapegoat for “I want things back the way they were”.

This week has felt like a turning point in the worst way. We lost Dolly, a genuine artist and teller of stories. Tonight was the first night I’ve gotten in an Uber and every song on their playlist has been AI slop. Even commercial radio at its most vapid and calculated is better than this.

Niemöller was asked by his concentration camp cellmate why he had ever supported Hitler and the Nazis. Reportedly, this is what he had to say for himself:

He also agreed not to allow pogroms against the Jews, assuring me as follows: "There will be restrictions against the Jews, but there will be no ghettos, no pogroms, in Germany." I really believed, given the widespread anti-Semitism in Germany, at that time – that Jews should avoid aspiring to Government positions or seats in the Reichstag. There were many Jews, especially among the Zionists, who took a similar stand. Hitler's assurance satisfied me at the time. On the other hand, I hated the growing atheistic movement, which was fostered and promoted by the Social Democrats and the Communists. Their hostility toward the Church made me pin my hopes on Hitler for a while."

Niemöller was a Nazi. He fought in the Freikorps. He was a willing participant in the Third Reich because he had sought and received assurances from Hitler himself that the Nazis would not go after Protestants. Then he ended up in a Camp. He was wrong. That’s why he wrote the poem.

I am becoming incredibly exhausted of this pattern: many people: "AI sucks!" Very Smart Person: ah but have you considered (distinct application of ML or statistical modeling that has no real relationship to what the tech industry is marketing as, and people broadly perceive as, "AI")

apropos of nothing, here's a terrific feature about a meaningful, life-saving use of artificial intelligence, which I have been thinking about for over a year. it's just extremely stupid to say that AI has zero benefits even if you don't think it should be used in writing (which I don't)!
