Plays too many video games. You can read my musings on them here: https://www.polygon.com/authors/austin-manchester

i would not be in games if it wasn’t for Mass Effect and Dragon Age. representation is not, and should not be, the end-all conversation about diversity. but these games really did shape me into someone who loves daring herself to pursue her dreams with everything she’s got. thank you, BioWare. 💖

“Natalie Checo, a Vancouver-based video game designer originally from the U.S., says she connected particularly with the genetically enhanced operative Miranda Lawson in Mass Effect 2.

"What resonated for me was the story about a woman who is biologically engineered to be perfect, and yet she still can't really attain that, because being perfect is a human impossibility," she said. "I think women grow up in a society that pushes us to be as perfect as possible."

Checo says that many of her game developer friends are from marginalized communities, and BioWare's games "pushed us to dream more than our real world has allowed us to feel like we can."”

AOC: "As AI begins to encroach in our society, their goal is to take your cognition away from you. AI's goal is to take your thoughts away from you, your ability to think away from you, so that you become dependent on a machine ... reading books is active resistance"

The "golden age of gaming" isn't one where the vast majority of people who love games can't afford the equipment to play them and where those who make the games get their ideas (and ability to pay rent) stolen from them.

Reflecting on the Resident Evil movie, and a thematic takeaway that's sticking with me with me is that it posits that no matter how insecure and incompetent you feel, you will never be as stupid as the people in power whose real incompetence will fuck up your life way worse than you could yourself.
