“It's morally bankrupt to do that, to know that these people are producing content that's in breach of your own regulations, yet you're actually not just allowing them, but you're encouraging them by paying them” www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

only just catching up with @alondra.bsky.social 's important article on social science and AI in Daedalus. A lot in it, but the following quote stood up for me: "There is a strong case that social science should refuse proprietary AI models entirely....

Field Theory: AI as Social Science Question, Object & Tool

Uses of advanced artificial intelligence are changing how societies organize labor, govern, produce knowledge, and make meaning. In light of these developments, this essay argues that AI models, tools...

Talerico is right, the sources of people's discontent today are 50 years in the making: a corporate & elite driven effort to roll back the "great society" and democracy gains of the 20th century. They won, not just in the US but in liberal capitalist democracies almost everywhere, including Canada

James Talarico: 50 years ago, a corporate lawyer named Lewis Powell circulated a memo around DC — a blueprint for how corporations could amass political power, reverse the gains of the Great Society and the New Deal, and rig the system for themselves. And it worked.

It will depress you! Sorry about that but it’s kind of my jam. I selected well-written books, some of them are even wryly funny at times — if you come from a culture with macabre humor. Still, the issue is big, complex, and scary. All the more reason for us to face it together.

A reading list that I know will depress me, but one that also seems vital to understand (and fight this version of) the future. From the brilliant @tressiemcphd.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/o...

From the cultural industries to the creator economy, some things don't: "This is why 'the Creator Economy is growing' can feel false to many creators. The market is expanding @ the platform, ad, & infrastructure level, but the income distribution remains brutal." newmarketpitch.com/blogs/news/c...

Is the Creator Economy growing now?

The Creator Economy is growing, but not how creators expect. See why ad spend, AI tools, TikTok Shop, and creator commerce are booming while average creator income stays fragile.

Nice write-up of the "AI has gone rogue" gambit by @karlbode.com, why Altma, Amodei, Musk, and their ilk lean into it ... hard, and who wins and loses from its use.

In @karlbode.com's scathing write-up of the "OpenAI rogue hacker" marketing stunt, he highlights the underreported detail that this extremely responsible AI company ran their exploit kit with safety guardrails disabled. Once again, I ask: why haven't they been charged? karlbode.com/ai-doomsday-...

People think "Hollywood" is rich and famous. The reality? Film and TV is a national industry. It's a blue collar industry. And it is an industry free fall. My latest for @newrepublic.com on how the Paramount merger would crush blue collar workers who can not afford it newrepublic.com/article/2136...

There’s a Blue-Collar Hollywood—and the Paramount Merger Will Kill It

Hollywood isn’t all glamour. It’s thousands of line workers. And a Paramount takeover of Warner will make their lives even more precarious.
