It will depress you! Sorry about that but it’s kind of my jam. I selected well-written books, some of them are even wryly funny at times — if you come from a culture with macabre humor. Still, the issue is big, complex, and scary. All the more reason for us to face it together.

A reading list that I know will depress me, but one that also seems vital to understand (and fight this version of) the future. From the brilliant @tressiemcphd.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/08/03/o...

From the cultural industries to the creator economy, some things don't: "This is why 'the Creator Economy is growing' can feel false to many creators. The market is expanding @ the platform, ad, & infrastructure level, but the income distribution remains brutal." newmarketpitch.com/blogs/news/c...

Is the Creator Economy growing now?

The Creator Economy is growing, but not how creators expect. See why ad spend, AI tools, TikTok Shop, and creator commerce are booming while average creator income stays fragile.

Nice write-up of the "AI has gone rogue" gambit by @karlbode.com, why Altma, Amodei, Musk, and their ilk lean into it ... hard, and who wins and loses from its use.

In @karlbode.com's scathing write-up of the "OpenAI rogue hacker" marketing stunt, he highlights the underreported detail that this extremely responsible AI company ran their exploit kit with safety guardrails disabled. Once again, I ask: why haven't they been charged? karlbode.com/ai-doomsday-...

People think "Hollywood" is rich and famous. The reality? Film and TV is a national industry. It's a blue collar industry. And it is an industry free fall. My latest for @newrepublic.com on how the Paramount merger would crush blue collar workers who can not afford it newrepublic.com/article/2136...

There’s a Blue-Collar Hollywood—and the Paramount Merger Will Kill It

Hollywood isn’t all glamour. It’s thousands of line workers. And a Paramount takeover of Warner will make their lives even more precarious.

The case for why Paramount's bid to takeover Warner Bros Discovery is a bad deal and against the law. Data from our @sshrc-crsh.canada.ca supported Global Media and Internet Concentration Project gets a camro or two in this briefing (if it's similar to other versions I've seen).

Thinking about this again, I see people every day saying something like "Canada needs to" followed by ideas of collective action, bolstering social safety nets, and preparing for a rocky independence. Actions that are in reality opposite of what the gov is doing. Good ideas are out there.

New from me, in which I invite the federal government and others to abandon the belief that the way to deal with a bad-faith partner who ripped up your trade agreement is another, better trade agreement. Canada needs a reality-based strategy. And a Royal Commission is the best way to develop it.

The Trump administration tried to use visa denials and deportation to silence researchers who study social media. A court just said no. Sunday Tagliasacchi and Elisabeth Snyder, former legal externs at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, break down the CITR v. Rubio ruling.

Trump Cannot Use Immigration Law to Silence Technology Researchers

RE the MAHA/public health discourse. MAHA is clearly tapping into something on the part some members of the public that the medical system isn't satisfying. The problem is that MAHA -and the administration - are offering it in bad faith. From me last year: www.nytimes.com/2025/06/20/o...

Opinion | Holy Water Couldn’t Save My Husband. MAHA Wouldn’t Have, Either. (Published 2025)

I believe in medical science, but when my husband had cancer, I found myself trying to cure him with holy water and MAHA-like remedies.
