Spanish speaking media is reporting that agents are taking away visas from mothers at the border after questioning them why they had their kids in the US. There are rumours they may start asking the same to permanent residents

It’s back to school! We’ve secured millions from early childhood education centers at Sandia Pueblo, Ruidoso & Mescalero, new community school at To'hajiilee, STEM pipelines for students at UNM, & federal legislation to support New Mexico’s universal childcare and early childhood education programs.
There's a whole world out there of fantastic science communicators who are not influencers. Almost no one I know can do that work as a full-time job (even the really good ones with large platforms). Most are doing it on the side, without resources or platforms. They've always been there.

JW Mason@jwmason.bsky.social · 2w agoIt is certainly true that the tech sector enjoys increasing returns. But it is *not* true that this is a difference from "traditional production industries" - increasing returns are ubiquitous in manufacturing. giftarticle.ft.com/giftarticle/...
Or do we mean poor people who grew up in rural areas, or emigrated there to work? Because that's a WHOLE different kind of "rural outreach" than "talking to farmers" is. Or the "preserving nature" voters.
So when we say "rural outreach"… who do we mean? Rural areas aren't a monolith. Do we mean big landowners & mining interests? Do we mean the rural cousins of urban libs, who tend to come from middle class+ rural families? (not exclusively obvs, but that's who can afford to send kids to college)
So when we say "rural outreach," it's good to be specific about what we mean by that. E.g. way upthread, the article we're talking about is about a lady who was already MAGA back when she was in urban Florida. Way before she bought a farm. Odds are good most of her audience is urban as well.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.

But folks aren't despite the fact that our system does give disproportionate power to rural areas. But instead of taking that as the rules of the game as it exists, and actually organizing, we complain about it.

No one will ever sell to me that these models “chose” to hack stuff. Either they are being told to go look for these things by someone. Or something in their programming is something about play until you cannot stop to open a door. BUT THEY ARE NOT SENTIENT
I want to be clear I am pro-public schools. I will send my kid to public school next year. i am also asking for an exemption so she cannot use AI tutors in fucking Kindergarten. And if they bring a fucking robot into her classroom I am pulling her out

David Dayen@ddayen.bsky.social · 4w agoThe 1997 Flores settlement says children can only be in immigration detention for 20 days. A new legal filing shows that kids at CoreCivic's detention facility in Dilley, TX have been there as long as 323 days, & includes firsthand accounts of the abuse guards are inflicting on children.
My instinct is that they will allow people to finish in 5-6 but will cut short longer stays. But I am pretty sure the real target is destroying OPT

For people that lack the experience/context I arrived to the US in 2014 in an F-1 visa and finished my program in exactly 5 years. Additionally I was under OPT for 1 year. That means 6 years total under F-1 My husband arrived in 2014. Was forced to master out in 2017. Worked in OPT 6mo 1/n
