In this week in the year 476, the insignificant boy-emperor Romulus (nicknamed Augustulus) was deposed by Odoacer, leader of the western Roman field army in Italy. This event has received notoriety as "the fall of the [western] Roman empire". A thread on one of the biggest Bad Ancient History takes.

Är tjej-nyåret innan eller efter valet? Vad händer om det blir 90 dagars regeringsbildning? Eller nyval? BEHÖVER BESKED, vill bara handla blommiga anteckningsböcker och tjusiga strumpbyxor!

I started my PhD program with an eight week old at home, sole income being my doctoral stipend, in a history program, in Knoxville, TN. And every month we got a new book to read to my son, free, mailed to us, so my kid, my kids, grew up in rooms full of books even when I had no money. That's Dolly.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

"I have to be blunt here: Our critics are really fucking stupid, and we’ve given them way too much leeway to conjure senile fantasies out of their own illiteracy. We need to stop taking their trolling in good faith..."

Humanists Have Done Nothing Wrong | Defector

For many years, I’ve held a pet theory that cultural consumers can be grouped into two broad categories: Primary Source People and Secondary Source People. The former are the book lovers, cinephiles, ...

Emily Wilson Writing reviews of a film that she's sad to have seen Yells at the screen Picks up her laptop Nolan's pastiche of the epic she worked to translate How does it rate? All the shallow film tropes Where do they all come from? All of Homer's richness Where did it all go wrong?

[James Stewart as Odysseus] now listen here, Agamemnon, I'm going home, y'see. You keep your fancy armour, I'm getting off this crummy ol' beach. [Spotting the Cyclops] now here's a curious fella, he's only got one peeper

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

Srsly, am having the BEST SUMMER EVER, every day brings more Homeric discourse; philology slap fights, livid classicists, Odyssean hot takes, and translators who rage! THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER LIKE IT!

On the one hand I literacy is in decline, our collective capacity for attention & critical thought has been grievously eroded, and all of us are getting stupider, easier to exploit, and less alert to beauty. On the other hand, pop culture is currently dominated by a war of competing classicists.

Is this a good time to mention that in college my History of Translation lecturer (Michael Cronin) told us that one of the first vernacular translations of The Illiad was into Irish, and the translator had to give the main characters dogs because in Gaelic society a free man had a dog

Homer called it a "wine-dark sea" because Cool Blue was the most popular flavor of wine back in those days. lost to history now, I'm afraid. climate change and all.
