My last article as the labour reporter at @pressprogress.ca is about.... media layoffs! Earlier this month, Rogers closed six stations and laid off 230 radio workers across the country. In Vancouver, the layoffs hit a newsroom that had struggled for years to unionize.

I talked to Nate Pike of @thebreakdownab.bsky.social about how his media company was forced to shut down and stop talking about the UCP in response to a court order Pike says everyone in Alberta knows these kinds of lawsuits are not part of “legal strategy," they're a “communication strategy”

Pike says many in Alberta political circles understand these kinds of lawsuits are not genuinely seeking compensation for real damages, but are instead used as a heavy- handed "communications tool" to neutralize critics. "This isn't a legal strategy. This is a communication strategy." Pike said. "This is the tool in their toolbox." "If you have people in the highest corridors of power who are looking at ways to weaponize the legal system as communications tools, then I can think of no greater argument for anti-SLAPP legislation."
