Very early in the pandemic, I spent 2 terrible weeks in isolation, unable to breathe or walk across the room. Waiting my temp. to spike. Worrying about my kids. Fighting against dying. In the middle of this covid revisionist, anti-vax bullshit, it was worth saying what that felt like:

Poem titled "Gnawed." The text of the poem reads:

Gnawed

Kalends of April, 2020

I can feel the rat,
dark and angry,
buried
in the furrows of my chest,
trying hard to pull apart
the fiber of my breathing.
Twisting. Writhing.
Clawing
with a feral-hearted hatred
at the bonds that sinew
soul to skin.
I cannot walk across the room without
the rasping of its teeth
along the inside of my ribs,
or speak without it screaming
in the shallows of my breath.
I can only lie beyond
the borders of my life,
checking the thermometer
a hundred times a day
as all the while
I am being
eaten
from the inside out.

From Genoa to Tangier, dockworkers are refusing weapons shipments and shutting down ports to “create real pressure to stop this dirty war.” @sarahlazare.bsky.social reports that unions in six countries are organizing with the demand: “Public resources must be used to meet people’s social needs."

It's been said by other people, but that tick of being so confident in yourself that you don't see how much you reveal when you do something like this -- how thin skinned, how petty, small & vindictive you are, how dull -- is a feature not a bug of humanity. We know to stay away from these sorts.

Received this bizarre email out of the blue yesterday from National Post columnist Adam Zivo gloating over my former colleague's layoff notice I'd like to thank Postmedia for looking into it and issuing this statement clarifying Zivo is expected to uphold professional standards for employee conduct

Congratulations Excellent work PressProgress has been put in a pretty dire financial situation because of a major lawsuit, so while this wasn't exactly a total surprise for me, I didn't think it would come to this so soon. 4:10 PM • Jul 27, 2026 Adam Zivo | B.A. M.P.P. “The news of station closures came just one day after Rogers announced the company spent $4.35 billion to buy the remaining ownership stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, becoming the sole owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Raptors and Toronto Football Club.”

My last article as the labour reporter at @pressprogress.ca is about.... media layoffs! Earlier this month, Rogers closed six stations and laid off 230 radio workers across the country. In Vancouver, the layoffs hit a newsroom that had struggled for years to unionize.

I had an idea years ago of creating a (paid) labour reporting internship to help students gain experience doing labour reporting Emma was our first labour intern and I was so proud we could later hire her as full-time labour reporter Please follow @emmaarkell.bsky.social and support her journalism

I've been reading Shift Work for about four and a half years. It's a damn shame to see it go; I don't know where I'll get the lowdown on Canadian labo(u)r now.

It sucks that so much of our media in Canada is the same syndicated material put out by the handful of monopolies. We're losing coverage not only of local politics, but local arts & culture.

Approximately 1 out of 3 women will experience sexual and/or physical abuse in their lifetime and you still have men claiming that allegations must be false because there are too many of them. It’s actually the opposite. The vast majority allegations will never become public

The rich have ALWAYS argued that they deserve more influence in the public sphere because they are rich (it is the basis of our entire political system!). Without strong organizations defending working people--unions and left parties--this type of rhetoric reinforces authoritarianism.

The jackals at Juno News are celebrating a talented journalist being laid off. Must be nice to never have to do layoffs because you can just invent reporters and pretend you hired them instead, eh Keean?

AI “art“ and “writing” is so hollow and soulless. If you conceive of the meaning of life as existing with other plants and creatures in this sort of state of death and life and creation… there’s no space for it. It mocks and undermines what makes life worth living

Dealing with legal harassment, even - perhaps *especially* from the guilty - is time consuming, expensive, and highly stressful. It's one of the hardest parts of investigative journalism, triply so if you're an independent reporter.
